e) A constant retarding force of 50 N is applied to a body of mass 20 Kg moving
initially with a speed of 15 m/s. How long does the body take to stop?

i) A force of 72 dyne is inclined to the horizontal at an angle of 600 .Find the
acceleration in a mass of 9gm, which moves in a horizontal direction.
j) What is limiting friction?
m)Why cyclists lean inward when moving along a curved path? Determine the angle
through which a cyclist bends from the vertical while negotiating a curve.
n) A body of mass 0.4 kg moving with a constant speed of 10m/s to the north is
subjected to a constant force of 8 N directed towards the south for 30 sec. take the
instant the force is applied to be t=0, the position of the body at that time to be
x=0 and predict at t=100sec.
3. Answer the following question 3x8=24
a) Consider a simple pendulum, having a bob attached to a string that oscillates
under the action of the force of gravity. Suppose that the period of oscillation of
the simple pendulum depends on (i) mass m of the bob (ii) length l of the
pendulum and (iii) acceleration due to gravity g at the place. Derive the
expression for its time period using method of dimensions.
b) The displacement x of a particle moving along x- axis is given by x=5 t 2+3 t−8 . Find
a) Initial velocity of the particle
b) Average velocity between 3sec and 7 sec.
c) The acceleration of the particle.
c) Derive the following equation of motion.
I. v=u + at (by calculus method)
II. v 2−u2=2 as (by graphical method)
d) A motor car , starting from rest, moves with uniform acceleration and attains a
velocity of 8m/s in 8 sec. it then moves with uniform velocity and finally brought
to rest in 32m under uniform retardation. The total distance travelled by the car is
464 m. Find
i. The acceleration
ii. The retardation and
iii. The total time taken.
e) What is the acceleration of the block and the trolley system shown in fig, if the co-
efficient of kinetic friction between the trolley and the surface is 0.04? What is the
tension in the string? Neglect the mass of the string.
f) A motorboat is racing towards north at 25 km/hr and the water current in that
region is 10 km/hr in the direction of 600 east of south. Find the resultant velocity
of the boat.
g) Define centripetal acceleration. Derive an expression for it.
Or
Show that the impulse of a force is equal to the change in momentum
produced by the force. Force acting on a body of mass 2kg varies with time as
shown in fig. Find
(i) Impulse of the force and
(ii) The final velocity of the body.
h) Show that Newton’s second law of motion is the real law of motion

a) A particle starts from the origin at t=0 with a velocity 5 i^ m/s and moves in x-y

plane under action of a force which produces a constant acceleration of (3 i+2
ms .

d) Find the expression for the safest speed of a car while negotiating a banked
road.
Or
A monkey of mass 40 kg climbs on a rope which can stand a maximum tension
of 600 N. In which of the following cases will the rope break: the monkey
i. Climbs up with an acceleration of 6m/s2
ii. Climbs down with an acceleration of 4 m/s2
iii. Climbs up with a uniform speed of 5m/s
iv. Falls down the rope nearly freely under gravity?
Take g=10 m/s2. Ignore the mass of the rope.
