EME 620 Instructional Unit

Team E (Rosa Mercado & Cris Vicentini)

INSTRUCTIONAL UNIT
The instructional unit focuses on objectives 5 and 6, since both objectives are
closely related to F-1 visa international student employment.
At the end of the training, learners will be able to:
-

Identify and describe rules regarding on-campus employment for F-1 students

Define CPT and describe its rules and eligibility

The content will be delivered in a face-to-face format, taking place in a well-lit and
noise-free environment (R&C conference room). Delivery of instruction for objectives 5
and 6 will last 90 minutes, as demonstrated below:
Activity 1 Warm-up (5 minutes)
Learners will be shown a quick 2- minute introductory video to transition from
what they have learned so far (modules 1-4) to the new content. The video will briefly
review the key elements from the previous modules, as well as introduce the topic of the
instructional unit: F-1 student visa employment in the U.S.
Activity 2 On-Campus Employment PowerPoint (10 minutes)
Content will be presented in a PowerPoint slideshow containing information
pertaining to on-campus employment rules for F-1 students (Appendix A).
Activity 3 Kahoot (2 minutes)
After the slideshow presentation, learners will be tested on their knowledge by
answering 5 questions regarding on-campus employment in a clicker game format. As
each question is presented to learners, they have 20-seconds to select the correct
answer, using their phones as clickers. At the end of the allotted time, the correct
answer is shown. This is an opportunity to review the content learners have seen so far,
and assess their understanding of the subject (formative assessment).

Activity 4 Curricular Practical Training (CPT) PowerPoint (20 minutes)

Content will be presented in a PowerPoint slideshow, in order to help learners
understand what CPT is, its purpose, and the rules regulating this type of employment
(Appendix A).
Activity 5 Q&A and Discussion (3-5 minutes)
After the slideshow presentation, learners will have the opportunity to discuss
what they have learned and ask questions to clarify possible misunderstandings.
Activity 6 Jeopardy Game (35-40 minutes)
After being exposed to the content of modules 5 and 6, learners will be tested on
their knowledge by answering a variety of questions in Jeopardy game format, as
demonstrated in Appendix B. To play the game, learners will have to choose one of
three categories: On-campus employment, CPT, and Identify the rule. The higher the
number of points a question is worth, the harder the question will become. If learners do
not provide the correct answer to a question, content will be reviewed and clarifications
will be made at that time. This type of formative assessment is important to ensure that
the training is effective and efficient.
Activity 7 Final Module Questions (5-8 minutes)
After playing the Jeopardy game and reviewing all the information from modules
5 and 6, learners will have the opportunity to ask final questions and clarify all their
doubts before proceeding into the next modules of instruction.
