What are text features?

Where can you find the headings, subheadings, bold words,
and captions?
How do these text features help us locate key facts and
information?
Students will be able to identify various text features
(headings, subheadings, captions, and bold print) to locate
key facts or information in a non-fiction book.
Students will be able to use digital tools (in this case the
app PicCollage) to demonstrate their knowledge of text
features in collaboration with peers.
Smartboard/ Interactive Tech Display, iPads (class set), nonfiction books with text features, sticky notes, Kahoot App,
PicCollage App, Flocabulary subscription
Students sit together in a larger group on the library
reading rug in front of the Smartboard/ Interactive
Tech Display.
First the media specialist asks questions to see what
the students know about text features.
Then the students watch a short video on
Flocabulary about Text Features. The educational
video is in a musical rap version that reviews text
features in a non-fiction sloth book. The sloths even
do a little rapping. It has a very catchy beat and is
quite funny. Second grade students love it!

Next review the concepts with them. The

collaborative classroom teacher wanted to focus on
four main text features- headings, subheadings, bold
words, and captions.
Students may ask any questions they still have about
text features. The media specialist will show other
examples from books and online resources (such as
National Geographic Kids.)
Before the class had entered the media center/library
the media specialist places some non-fiction books
on the tables that include text features.
Students choose a partner/teammate.
Each team is given four labeled sticky notes (they are
labeled
with
the
text
featuresheadings,
subheadings, bold words, and captions.
The partners search the books for the four main text
features we focused on.
Once found they place a sticky note label on the
correct text feature in the books.
After the students have found all four text features
they return to the library rug.
Using the Smartboard/Interactive Tech Display the
media specialist and technology teacher explained
how to use PicCollage.
Each team is given an iPad.
With their partner the students take pictures using an
iPad for their PicCollage of the four text features they
found in the books.
They create a picture collage of these text features.
Then they write/type labels to identify each text
feature in the collage.
Students may add colorful backgrounds and arrows
as needed/wanted.
Both teachers (media specialist and technology
teacher) walk around helping students as needed.
When students finish they come back together to the
rug to share their PicCollages with their classmates
on the larger display screen.
As an assessment the media specialist created a
Khoot quiz about the text features we covered.

The Kahoot quiz is taken online and has pictures,

questions, and multiple choice answers.
To play the media specialist/teacher launches it then
the students sign-in on their tech device (these
students have their iPads) with a code.
The questions are timed and it will tell the student
right away if the answer they chose was correct or
not. There is a scoreboard that the students can see.
At the end of the Kahoot quiz the teacher can see the
results and use it for an assessment.
