Universal Design for Learning (UDL): PowerPoint is a universal design for learning tool that gives the
students a frame work for design for learning experience. PowerPoint has the ability to add audio to the slides
for the students to listen to. Not only this, but the audio can be changed to many different languages and
translate the words for the students. This helps the EL see and hear the words at the same time. They are able
to go back and re-watch the video as much as they want to.
Engagement: Through the audio option, students are able to actively engage in a read aloud book. This
PowerPoint book has many different questions embedded into the story to involve the reader throughout.
This is a great way to introduce the seasons and weather to a first-grade class. All of the pictures and words
flip to the next page once it is read. It allows the students to be able to look at the pictures and words for a
short period of time before moving to the next part of the story.
Representation: The slides are simple and to grade level appropriate for the students. The questions are right
about the picture; therefore, this helps students look at the picture and answer the question. The words are
minimum and the words are read at an appropriate pace for the a first-grade class.
Action and Express: This story books are an interactive and allows students to answer the question before
revealing the answer. The PowerPoint is presented with different pictures that correlate with the words on
the slides.

Lesson idea implementation:

This PowerPoint will be displayed on an interactive board facing the entire class. The teacher will use the
slides with the questions to guide the lesson and introduce the four seasons to the class. The teacher will stop
and call on students to answer the questions and identify characteristics in the pictures. After all of the slides
are reviewed, the teacher will ask the students to get into groups of 3-4 students.

Each group will pick one of the four seasons and become an expert with their classmates. The group will be
given a certain amount of time to research and collect as much as they can about their one seasons. After
that, the groups will be asked to create an eBook on their season. They will be able to share this information
with their classmates by using the collaborative feature. The students will also have the opportunity to
present their eBook the class and post it to the class website.
Reflective Practice: For this lesson, the teacher could send the eBooks and PowerPoint out on the Class Dojo
as an addition resource to bring this lesson outside of the four walls of the classroom. This would allow the
students the ability to show their parents and friends their eBook as much as they would like. Additionally,
they could watch theirs and their peers eBooks again in case they need to relearn material. The teacher could
also print the PowerPoint out in library and laminated so that student’s all have their own books that they
created. These can be placed in the class library for the students to look at whenever they like. Publishing the
book beyond the four walls, allows the lesson to go from a LoTi 4 to a LoTi 5.
