Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Students will be able to access both the Narrated PowerPoint and non-narrated PowerPoint as many times as
they need. Both are placed on the class website, which gives them the unlimited access in and out of the
classroom. If there are students that need more time on a slide or missed some information, they have the
ability to pause and remind the video. Students even have the ability of downloading the PowerPoint and
printing it out so they can follow along an take their own notes on each slide. At the time of the actual lesson
the teacher will have fill in the blank notes that follows along with the PowerPoint.

Lesson idea implementation:

The PowerPoint will be created prior to the lesson, after the completion of the lesson it will then be uploaded
to the class website. Students will be given Fill in the Blank Notes that follows along with the PowerPoint. The
teacher will go over the PowerPoint once, as an in-class lesson, while the students follow along with their
notes page. At the beginning of the lesson the teacher will have the students complete a Notice and
Wondering based on a series of pictures from the different Regions of Georgia. The students will then break
into collaborative groups, such as pairs or table groups, to discuss what they noticed and wondered about
while looking at the images. Then the teacher will give a brief introduction to the PowerPoint presentation
and explain that they will see some of the same images again.
During this lesson the teacher will break down each Region of Georgia and inform the students of interesting
places and facts that are unique to each Region. The teacher will make the lesson interactive by asking the
students questions about the Regions that are personal to them, such as What Region do they live in? The
Teacher will also ask students to make connections based off their Notice and Wonderings that they did at
the beginning of the lesson. During this time students will be able to share information and ask questions
about the Regions of Georgia. At the end of the lesson the students will be broken into five groups, and each

group will be assigned one of the Regions of Georgia. The students will be asked to research their specific
Region and describe the types of animals and plants that can be found in that Region. Each group will present
their findings to the rest of the class and at the end of the week the class will take a short quiz over what they
learned.

Reflective Practice:

After designing this lesson idea, I feel that the activities I created can impact student learning because I am
allowing the students to approach the material in an interactive way. Prior to even letting the students view
the PowerPoint, they will be given an opportunity to view images and think about what they see. I feel that
this is important because it is allowing the students to express their thoughts on what they viewed as
important and it becomes more personal to them. I feel that posting a Narrated version of the PowerPoint
will also be helpful to students that missed class or did not have enough time to fill in the blanks during the
lesson. Students will also be able to interact and follow along with the lesson using a Fill in the Blank note
sheet based on the information in the PowerPoint. I feel that this lesson will be a great way to introduce the
students to a new unit in Social Studies. I do believe there are other things that I could add to extend on the
student’s knowledge. When having the students break into groups, I could give them guidelines and have
them create a PowerPoint based on their specific Region. Other technologies that I could use would be
quizzing the students with a Kahoot! after the lesson.
