Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The activity that I chose for this lesson would be to have students create a Bubbl.us that breaks down the
concept of classifying rocks. The purpose behind using Bubbl.us will allow all students to create a tree that
classifies the different types of rocks, how they form, and even the types that there are. The tree can be use
different colors to help students see the different relationships between the different types of rocks and how
each rock breaks down into different families. Using this format and website relates to UDL and shows an
example of the Multiple Means of Representation. Students have the ability to adapt this format to how they
want. They could make the Bubbl.us to clarify the different terms and it shows a visual of those terms.
Lesson idea implementation:
The teacher will begin this lesson by having examples of different rocks passed around the class. The students
will have the opportunity to look and hold each rock and write a description of them. The rocks will be on a
rotation, so each student has the same amount of time to write about each rock that is placed on their table.
As they describe each rock, they will make their best educated guess on how they would classify this rock
based off the information they learned in a lesson prior. Once the rotation is completed the teacher will have
the students share their notes on what their observed. The teacher will then go into explaining what their
task will be, which will be creating a Bubbl.us over the 3 different types of rocks. The teacher will share the
example that was created with how they designed a tree relating to the classification of Rocks.

After the students review the teacher’s model Bubbl.us they will be given a set of guideline on how they need
to create their Bubbl.us. These guidelines will include the types of rocks, their subcategories, if any, the
definition of how these rocks are formed, and a few different examples of each type of rock. To extend on this
lesson the student could download their work and add pictures of each rock they listed or draw out the way
these rocks are formed. For students that may be at a lower level, they will have the ability to not provide the
pictures because it could be extra work that may cause them stress. Feedback will be given to the students
based on if they met all of the guidelines that were provided to them. This feedback can be done one on one
and students can be given the opportunity to fix their Bubbl.us before printing off their final draft. This lesson

will be concluded by allowing student 25 minutes to work on creating their Bubbl.us and more time will be
given throughout the week, with the final being due on Friday.

Reflective Practice:
After designing this lesson idea, I feel that the activities I created will impact the students learning because
they have the ability to set up the Bubbl.us to how they want the information to be laid out and they do the
research behind the topic they have. This is not an introductory activity to this unit of study, but I would plan
to have this in the middle of a lesson. With that being said, I can extend this lesson by having students create
a PowerPoint with the information that they gathered. That way the students have the opportunity to use
another technology tool that could further enhance this project.
