Steinbecksetsthetoneofhisstoriesbyusinggoodwordchoice.Inthisexcerpt,thisisdemonstratedbyhis
useofdimandnegativeworddragged.Steinbeckcreatesaseeminglyendlesscycleinthetown,further
increasingthesenseofhopelessness.Thesnowmayalsorepresenttheovercastanddauntingoftheinvading
army,andit'srepeatingcycleofexportingcoal.

classicthoughtanditiscommontoseeasoldierwantingsomethingalongthelinesofbutter,meat,andthe
attentionofgirls.Talkingopeninglyisalsopartofthesoldierscompanionship.
8.Wintersaid,"It'sfunnyforadoctortothinkofdestruction,butIthinkallinvadedpeoplewanttoresist.
Wearedisarmedourspiritsandbodiesaren'tenough.Thespiritofadisarmedmansinks."(Steinbeck83)

Thispassageispartofasegmentinthechapterquestioninghowandiftheyshouldresist.Dr.Winter
believesthatallinvadedpeoplewanttoresist.However,thetownspeoplehavenogunsandanytypeof
weapon.Healsomentionshowtheoveralldismaltoneandhopelessnessofthetownspeoplemightbe
becausetheyaredisarmed.

9.Highintheairthetwobomberscircled,mudcoloredplanes.Theycuttheirthrottlesandsoared,
circling.Andfromthebellyofeachonetinylittleobjectsdropped,hundredsofthem,oneafteranother.
Theyplummetedafewfeetandthenlittleparachutesopenedanddriftedsmallpackagessilentlyandslowly
towardtheearth,andtheplanesraisedtheirthrottlesandgainedaltitude,andthencuttheirthrottlesand
circledagain,andmoreofthelittleobjectsplummeteddown,andthentheplanesturnedandflewbackin
thedirectionfromwhichtheyhadcome.(Steinbeck89)

Thelittlepackagesbeingdroppedremindmeoftwothings.Theyremindmeofactualitemsbeingdropped
togroundforces,aswellasthelittlesponsorshippackagesdroppedin
TheHungerGames
.Thechildrenrun
around,tryingtofindthesepackagesalmostasiftheywereinanEasteregghunt.Thisisalsoverysimilar
tothealliessupportduringWWII.

10.Ordensaid,"Icantalktoyou,Doctor,andIprobablywon'tbeabletotalkagain.Therearelittle
shamefulthingsinmymind."Hecoughedandglancedattherigidsoldier,butthesoldiergavenosignof
havingheard."Ihavebeenthinkingofmyowndeath.Iftheyfollowtheusualcourse,theymustkillme,
andthentheymustkillyou."AndwhenWinterwassilent,hesaid,"Mustn'tthey?"(Steinbeck105)

MayorOrdenbelievesthatheandthedoctorfacecertaindeath.Thisisconsistentwithmanyinvasions.Dr.
Winterdoesn'tthinktheymustkillandheisright.
