Intro. To Directing
Arcadia: Images

One of the first images, I believe, that carries more significance in

production would be the tortoise.
o Why would Stoppard have Septimus move the tortoise, unless
o

there is a deeper significance?

The tortoise should be big enough to be noticeable and bulky

enough so that it is not confused with being a turtle.

Another image is possibly the transitions between time periods.
o According to Stoppard, the set should not be changed in the
transitions so lighting and costumes have to be the main

differences.
In Act 2, scene 3, on page 84, the line Be careful with the flame
should probably come with a slight pause since it foreshadows the
event of Thomasinas death
o Maybe she wears white in this scene to resemble somewhat of

an angel.
Act 2, scene 3, should be handled with care since there are many

things going on in two different time periods.

o The characters placement on stage is very crucial in this scene
The final moment where the two couples are dancing should linger for
a bit
o

Maybe have the couples circle each other around the stage to
show the melding of the two different time periods.
