Unit: Day of the Dead Skulls

Students Will Be Able To: create a pattern and theme filled skull in celebration of Hispanic
Heritage Month.
Art History:
Art is a form of expression, imagination, and emotion
All art is made by using the Elements of Art and Principles of Design together
Explore the culture and expressive themes of the Day of the Dead skulls
Review the patterns and colors that are prevalent in Hispanic cultures
Art Production/ Goal:
Create a skull that represents the proportions of the human skull
Design a unique individual theme that is influenced from the Day of the Dead skulls
The theme must be consistent throughout the entire skull
Utilize marker to color the skull with a vibrant nature
Display the finished work for the schools Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration
Skills Learned/Activities:
Demonstration of drawing a skull
Discussion and accountable talk on Day of the Dead, themes, and drawing designs
Utilize the Elements of Art and Principles of Design to ensure that drawings are complete
Small group discussions to introduce critique and review the strengths of how students
used the Elements of Art and Principles of Design

the elements of art and principles of design in different historical eras and cultures.
1.3.8.D.1 Incorporate various art elements and the principles of balance, harmony, unity,
emphasis, proportion, and rhythm/movement in the creation of two- and three- dimensional
artworks, using a broad array of art media and art mediums to enhance the expression of
creative ideas (e.g., perspective, implied space, illusionary depth, value, and pattern).
