Unit: Vincent van Gogh Landscape

Paintings
Students Will Be Able To: analyze Vincent van Goghs use of color and line to create
perspective and movement filled landscape painting.
Art History:
Discuss post-impressionist, Vincent van Gogh
He created landscapes, portraits, and still lives
Dutch, 1863-1890
Analyze his use of color to achieve the impression of weather and colors
Evaluate his use of blending and impasto
Art Production/ Goal:
Create an individual composition that show perspective and movement
Paint a base layer using tempera paint cakes
Utilize perspective to create depth by drawing trees large in the foreground to small in the
background
Apply swirling and dashed lines in the sky to add the movement and impression of wind
Fill the painting with dashes of marker to add an impasto like quality
Skills Learned/Activities:
Demonstration of painting with tempera cakes as if they were water colors
Demonstration of perspective drawing to apply depth with drawing trees
Discussion and accountable talk on Vincent van Goghs paintings and color techniques
Utilize the Elements of Art and Principles of Design to ensure successful compositions
Small group discussions to strengthen critique skills and review students use of the
Elements of Art and Principles of Design
