Planning
The upcoming Walkable Washington
Symposium will recognize outstanding walkability projects and plans around the state. Walkable Washington is developing a digital case study archive of walkability projects and programs.
Community
Feet First began in 1995 as just a group of
citizens and professionals interested in the creation of walkable communities. Feet First has a plethora of events geared to involve citizens with their environment and any plans that could affect their neighborhoods. Walking tours aim to connect community members to city leaders while also introducing resources that residents may not know about in their neighborhoods. The Walkable Washington Symposium recognizes outstanding walkability projects around the state and provides planners and project developers an opportunity to meet each other.
(Some of ) What We Do Neighborhood Walking Ambassadors
Volunteers lead community
members on informative walks about neighborhoods across Seattle.
My Role
My primary job is to develop case studies
for the archive that we are in the process of creating. The idea of the archive is that people will be able to learn about interesting pedestrian developments around Washington in a simple and streamlined fashion. These studies will be readily available on the website as a digital archive or library of sorts. All case studies are written in a uniform organization, this way it is easy for those interested to learn about key details of the projects and programs. In order to write these case studies I contact project managers and interview them via phone to gather information.
Safe Routes to School
Encourages children to walk to
school and provides safety info.
Walking Audits
Audits work with community members,
elected officials, and city staff to assess the community and identify barriers and opportunities to walking so that the city or neighborhood can take steps toward improving walkability.
What I Learned
Working at Feet First/Walkable
Washington has given me confidence and experience interviewing decision makers in my community. I have been exposed to the real-world application of many of the concepts we discuss in class.
