Language Arts Reflection
After reading from the mathematics framework, the knowledge that I need to teach
English Language Art/ Literacy in elementary classroom would be that as a teacher, I must
have the knowledge in how to motivate my students to engage deeply in literacy tasks. When
teaching my own class, I would need to pick literature that I believe would interest my
students and have them wanting to continue reading. Students should be taught that reading
and writing is a fun subject that is a great way of self-expression and communication
throughout ones life.
My classes and fieldwork that have prepared me to see the magic in literacy are English
305, 308, and 487. In one specific moment during my fieldwork I was working with a student
on her reading. As I read the first page to her, she began to smile and I could see the joy that
the book brought to her. As she read the next page, I saw her excited and ready to continue
reading. She began to question the story and use critical thinking. I feel that I am well
prepared in interacting with my students in meaningful ways and expanding and enriching
their ideas. I believe that through visuals, students can be transported into literature. I also
believe that creative writing can help a student find that writing can be fun and great way of
expressing ones feelings. I feel less prepared in finding resources for my students if they are
having particular trouble in a specific area, but I know that I can always look online or ask
other teachers for help when I need it. For my artifact, I plan on using a fairy tale that I
wrote in my childrens literature class and a grammar book that I wrote in my English 487.
