1. DESCRIPTION OF CONTENT & CONTENT TYPE (Fact, Procedure, Concept, or Principle):
Understand name placement of numbers to make larger numbers. (Concept)
II. LEARNING OUTCOME (Objective): Students will use place value to correctly count numbers.
III. CURRICULUM CONNECTION (How lesson fits into larger unit sequence): Students learned
place value and will be using the peanut butter and jelly sandwich activity to learn placement of
numbers.
IV. INSTRUCTION
A ENGAGEMENT (Motivational Activities): Students will gather around the computer and watch a
youtube video about place value called Place Value Song.
[Link] Where is the ones place? What is the tens place? When do you need
to place a number in a specific category? What are some place value rules?
B INSTRUCTIONAL SEQUENCE (Teaching Methodology with Student Activities):
C Step #1 Students will learn the rules of place value.
a Using the pictures of the peanut butter and jelly sandwich students will discover the
placement. (The first slice of bread is the thousands place, the jelly is the hundreds place,
the peanut butter is the tens place and the last slice of bread is the ones place.)
b. Have you ever made a peanut butter and jelly ? How do you usually make the
sandwich? (Connect the making of the sandwich to place value.)
Step #2 Students will learn how to add numbers in the correct place value location.
a By using the different parts of the peanut butter and jelly sandwich, the students will see the
physical placement of the numbers. (Each part of the sandwich has numbers written down
on it in specific order in place value. I showed pictures in front of the class showing the
placement. )

any questions the students may have.
Step #3 Students will learn how to place numbers in the hundreds place.
a How do you write and add the numbers to make 435?
b Students will then show their sandwich as they pick random numbers from their deck of
cards.
Step #4 Students will recognize the importance of the different place values.
a Why is it important to know where to place the numbers? Does it change the value?
b Students will respond to my questions orally.
Step #5 The students will apply the place value rules and techniques.
a What can you tell me about the PB and J activity?
b Teacher will discuss how the activity helped them.
Step #6 Students do place value worksheet.
b They will count the hundreds, tens, and ones blocks that are on the worksheet.
c Students will write down the numbers that they counted.
