History-Social Science Reflection
In order to teach History-Social Science in an elementary classroom, teachers must be
well-rounded in world and United States history. The classes in History-Social Science and
field/classroom that have prepared me are LBS 375, and History 86,12, and 301 by showing me
the best ways students can learn facts and have also shown me great ways to make history
exciting for students. I feel well prepared in United States and California history because I was
always fascinated with those areas my whole life. I feel less prepared in the area of ancient
civilizations only because it is been a few years since I've taken a class covering that topic. The
artifacts or work samples I plan to share in this area of my portfolio is my essay on the novel,
Farewell to Manzanar, which talks about the Japanese relocation camps during WWII in the
point of view of a young girl and my essay on local founder of Wilmington, Phineas Banning.
The work samples demonstrate my knowledge, what I find interesting in History-Social Science,
and that I know California and local history. The work samples connect to my learning and my
personal experiences in teaching and learning of history social science because it shows my
personal interest in history and the areas that I have connected to that have made a great impact
in my life.
