College of Nursing Philosophy Of Nursing Statement Interpretation:

Definition of Philosophy: the study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and
existence, especially when considered as an academic discipline.
Attending the University of Arizonas College of Nursing program has been such a blessing in
my life. To me, Nursing is so much more than a career, but it is a passion, a lifestyle, and a labor
of love. I originally entered into nursing for it was what I found comfort in learning about in
relation to my life. I spent most of my time when I was younger in the hospital with my parents,
and my fears of their health complications were only eased through educating myself about
them. So I quickly became enveloped in the field of medicine as a whole and soon fell into
nursing due to my desire to work closely with patients, families, and people. A large part of
nursing must be learned through science, psychology, anatomy and physiology, mathematics, and
so much more. The philosophy of the University of Arizonas College of Nursing Mission
Statement does rely heavily on this fundamental knowledge, reality, and existence in regard to
academics and emphasizes the high standard expected of the students by the school, but it also
encompasses the necessity of empathy, integrity, and strength of character, all of which cannot be
taught. Rather these traits must be possessed by the individual students at the college of nursing
which is one of the many reasons I chose this school. For to me, nursing may be considered a
skillset that is largely based upon knowledge, however, nurses that touch lives have personalities
and values that drive them to provide passionate patient care every single day in congruence with
their knowledge. These nurses are the ones that inspire me to remain true to my character,
morals, and values while utilizing my knowledge to provide individualized patient care, and that
is why I became a nurse. I want to touch the lives of those around me through my work and my
daily life, and nursing allows me to do that in a very unique way.
