Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with (be
specific about the purpose and your role):
I attended an 8 hour phlebotomy course taught through Tucson Medical Center to
enhance my development as a student nurse and future professional in the field. The
purpose of the class was to teach the anatomy of the body and location of different veins
throughout the body and which veins may be chosen for straight stick blood draws over
IV placement and vice versa. Furthermore, the class was intended to assist healthcare
personnel in becoming more comfortable with drawing blood and starting IVs. As a
student my role was to listen and learn from the presenters of the class and practice
drawing blood from manikin arms with simulated blood and real humans. I practiced with
different gauges of butterfly needs with draws to a 10 ml syringe as well as direct draws
to tubes with the use of a vacutainer. In addition I practiced with the use of direct draw
eclipse needles.
Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?
The class was taught on the third floor of the Art Institute on Grant and Rosemont and the
duration of the course was 8 hours.
Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).
I think this experience was incredibly valuable to me as a student nurse, tech, and future
RN for it provided me with further insight on the ways to draw blood, the types of tubes

that need to be used for specific tests, and gave me further information on the amount of
time it takes for lab tests to result and how results are determined in lab testing facilities.
Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why or
why not? (Describe)
I absolutely would recommend this professional activity to anyone in the field of
medicine, because not only is knowledge power in the sense that understanding more
about phlebotomy and laboratory data assists in professional/ developmental growth, but
being good at drawing blood and starting IVs is an important aspect of providing high
quality patient care.
