A thin belt of length L surrounds two pulleys of radii R and r, as
shown in the figure:

A) Show that the angle (in radians) where the belt crosses itself satisfy the
following equation?
+ 2 cot ( /2)=(L/R+r)-
B) Suppose that R = 2.42ft, r = 1.21ft, and L = 27.78 ft. Find by
solving the equation in part (a) graphically. Express your
answer both in radians and in degrees.

Answer:
a)

a = R / Tan(/2)

a = R Cot(/2)

b = r / Tan(/2)

b = r Cot(/2)

C1 = R (+)
C2 = r (+)
L = 2a + 2b + C1 + C2
L = 2 R Cot(/2) + 2 r Cot(/2) + R (+) + r
(+)
L = 2 Cot(/2) (R+r) + (+) (R+r)
L = (R+r) [2 Cot(/2) + + ]
by (R+r)]
L / (R+r) = 2 Cot(/2) + +
[Subtract from each side]

[Divided

+ 2 Cot(/2) = [ L / (R+r) ]
(Satisfied)

b)
+ 2 Cot(/2) = [ L / (R+r) ]
+ 2 Cot(/2) = [ 27.78 / (2.42+1.21) ]
+ 2 Cot(/2) = [ 27.78 / 3.63 ]
+ 2 Cot(/2) = 7.653
[=3.14159]
+ 2 Cot(/2) = 4.511
[Divided by 2]
/2 + Cot(/2) = 2.2555

in Degrees :

in Radians :
= -0.4363
= -0.326
= -0.215
= -0.103
= 0.017
= 0.21
= 0.324

= 0.435
