FOR SALE: NEW FACES, NEW BODIES

Nowadays more and more people have had operations to change the way they look. We
interviewed four people about their experience. Here are some of their stories.
Im an actress, and I was conscious about the way my face looked in profile. Actually, what
I didnt like was the shape of my nose. It looked OK to me from the front, but when youre acting,
you arent always looking straight at the audience. So I had my nose reshaped to make it more
attractive. Now I dont worry about how I stand in front of someone, and I can concentrate on my
acting. I think that because of this, I have improved professionally. And of course that makes me
happy.
Susan, 24, actress
I had an accident playing sports when I was in college, and it left me with a small scar on
my forehead. It wasnt very noticeable, but it bothered me, and I always tried to hide it with my
hair, but I never had the time, or the money, to do something to get rid of it. When I turned 35 I
made up my mind to have plastic surgery to correct it. In the end I decided to have a chin implant as
well, to give my chin a more masculine, decisive look. The surgery hasnt changed my life, but I
certainly feel much better now.
Bill, 37, stock analyst
My problem was that I couldnt lose weight in my legs, no matter how much I exercised. I
tried everything: running, aerobics, diet. I just couldnt get my legs to look the way I wanted them. I
knew someone who had had liposuction to take away fat, and it seemed to have worked for her. So I
saved my money and had the operation two months ago. I cant say Im completed satisfied. My
legs are a lot better than they were before, but the doctor says he needs to correct a few spots. I have
to wait to see the final results before I can say whether I would recommend it or not.
Linda, 23, teacher
Everybody in my family gets baggy eyes quite young and I was getting them, too. Those fat
deposits under my eyes made me look tired or with a bad cold. The surgery only took an hour, and I
didnt have to stay in the hospital. It really wasnt worse than going to the dentist. I believe it would
be an acceptable solution to anyone
Fred, 31, business executive
Last year I had to get a new passport. When I saw my photo, I noticed my mouth seemed to
turn down at the corners. I began to smile a lot to try to correct it. It irritated me so much that I
decided to have a face lift. After six weeks I was back at work, feeling perfectly normal. Now I
dont need to force a smile anymore. According to my doctor, my skin will probably begin to get
loose again in about five years. I might have another face lift then, but this is something I dont
want to worry about now.
