SHAH SUSPENDED
Axe finally falls on Labour MP who
called for Israelis to be deported
JEREMY CORBYN has finally caved in to
mounting pressure and suspended Labour
MP Naz Shah, after she called for the deportation of Israelis from the Middle East.
The pressure finally told 24-hours after Shah
stepped down from her role as aide to shadow
chancellor John McDonnell, after it was revealed
she had shared a Facebook graphic showing an
image of Israels outline superimposed on to a
map of the US. The accompanying headline
read: Solution for Israel-Palestine Conflict Relocate Israel into United States, along with the
comment, problem solved.
It was posted in August 2014, at the height
of the last Israel-Hamas conflict and before Shah
became an MP. Her post suggested the US had
plenty of land to accommodate Israel as a
51st state, allowing Palestinians to get their
life and their land back.
A Labour spokesman said: Jeremy Corbyn
and Naz Shah have mutually agreed that she is
administratively suspended from the Labour
Party by the General Secretary. Pending investigation, she is unable to take part in any party
activity and the whip is removed.
Corbyn had been under intense pressure to
take such action after initially giving the Bradford West MP only a reprimand over her post.

Writing exclusively on the Jewish News website yesterday before her suspension, the Bradford West MP said: I am sorry. For someone who
knows the scourge of oppression and racism all
too well, it is important that I make an unequivocal apology for statements and ideas that I have
foolishly endorsed in the past.
The manner and tone of what I wrote in haste
is not excusable. With the understanding of the
issues I have now I would never have posted
them. I have to own up to the fact that ignorance
is not a defence. I made these posts at the
height of the Gaza conflict in 2014, when emotions were running high. But that is no excuse
for the offence I have given.
She added: The language I used was
wrong. It is hurtful. Whats important is the impact these posts have had on other people. I
understand that referring to Israel and Hitler as
I did is deeply offensive to Jewish people, for
which I apologise. Hindsight is a wonderful
thing and Im shocked myself at the language
I used in some instances during the Gaza-Israel
conflict.
But amid mounting calls from Tory MPs for
the whip to be withdrawn, she later announced
she would stand down from her unpaid role as
McDonnells parliamentary private secretary.

Prior to Shahs suspension Corbyn had

stood firm, saying: What she did was offensive and unacceptable. I have spoken to her
and made this clear. These are historic social media posts made before she was a
Member of Parliament. Naz has issued a
fulsome apology. She does not hold
these views and accepts she was completely wrong to have made these
posts. The Labour Party is implacably
opposed to anti-Semitism and all
forms of racism.
Jeremy Newmark, chair of the Jewish Labour Movement said: In
suspending Naz, the party has
acted fairly and consistently.
This provides a firm context
for a process of education.
Naz Shah is a politician
who is clearly on a political
journey, from a Respect firebrand in the choppy waters
of local Bradford politics
to the Labour Party. She
courageously stood up
to George Galloways

IN FOCUS: LABOUR ANTI-SEMITISM SCANDAL

Suspension over Holocaust slur

LABOUR HAS suspended a
party member who described
the Holocaust as a useful political tool of Israel to establish a financial racket, writes
Justin Cohen.
Dublin-based John McAuliffe,
who is understood to have
been an international member
of the UK party, is the latest
in a string of party members to
have faced similar action.

He wrote on Facebook: The

Holocaust has been the most
useful political tool of the Zionist government in Israel to establish a financial racket in the
West, whereby Israel receives
an unlimited sum for the duration of its existence.
The large level of poverty in
Israel among Holocaust survivors shows they dont care
about the emotional impact.

Shahs colleague in racism tweet

NAZ SHAH co-chaired a charity
with a councillor who has made
anti-Semitic views.
Until 2015 she ran the organisation Sharing Voices with councillor Mohammad Shabbir, who
has compared the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to the Holocaust.
In a tweet in August 2014,
Shabbir said: Every Palestinian
who survives the ongoing geno-

cide in Gaza is a holocaust survivor

(Holocaust = burnt offering).
Councillor Shabbir, who has
been pictured with Shah, has also
been shown to use the term
Zio on social media, which is a
racist term used by neo-Nazis.
Shah has shared and tweeted
blogs and posts by the councillor,
including one article comparing
Israel to Al Qaeda.

Top donor cuts Labour funding

A MAJOR donor to the Labour
Party has withdrawn his support amid the escalating antiSemitism scandal surrounding
the Labour Party.
David Abrahams, who has
donated around 650,000
since the turn of the century,
told Jewish News he did not
believe the party leadership
was doing enough to tackle
hate.

His remarks come following

a series of suspensions of
members and councillors over
the past month.
The key ally of Tony Blair
and Gordon Brown had been
a member of the Thousand
Club of donors until quitting
in recent weeks. The group receives invitations to bi-annual
receptions and networking
opportunities.

bigotry at the General Election. However,

her historic remarks and posting were repugnant and completely unacceptable.
Her contrition expressed over the past
day seems to be genuine and sincere. This
is part of that journey. We are optimistic that
she will now take steps to deepen her understanding of Jewish identity. We do not ask or
expect her to mute her criticism of the actions and policies of the Israeli government.
We do ask and expect her to build upon her
apology and contrition with a programme of
education and action that includes standing
up to anti-Semitism on the left and within the
Palestine Solidarity Movement.
Labour Friends of Israel chair Joan Ryan
said: Both the substance of Naz Shahs
comments, and language used by her, are
highly offensive and completely unacceptable. As such, they are incompatible with
her post as PPS to the shadow chancellor. I
would also urge our leadership to make
clear her views do not in any way reflect
those of the Labour Party. This incident underlines yet again the need for the Labour
Party to take urgent action to combat antiSemitism and anti-Zionism in all its forms.
A Community Security Trust spokesperson added: We note Naz Shahs apology
but believe it is inadequate to merely say
that she is sorry for having caused offence.
If there is no deeper understanding of what
was wrong, then her continued involvement
in the anti-Semitism inquiry must be called
into question.
Conservative MP for Hertsmere Oliver
Dowden said: It is completely unacceptable for anyone to phrases like transporta-

Naz Shah makes her apology in the house on Wednesday

The Labour MPs solution to the Middle East conflict

tion and solution when it comes to Israel.

Labours Naz Shah must know the dark historic significance they have for Jewish people. The Home Affairs Select Committee
on which she sits is to conduct an inquiry
into the rise of anti-Semitism; this raises serious questions about her fitness for it.
Her suspension came as Labour MPs demanded answers from the leadership over
reports it edited Shahs article for Jewish
News, removing references to anti-Semitism.
BuzzFeed said it had seen an original
version drawn up by the MPs office which
included an admission that she had
helped promote anti-Semitic tropes. This
section did not appear in the version published on our website.
In another apparently dropped passage, she allegedly called for an intersectional struggle, one where the concerns of
Jewish individuals and communities are
taken seriously and anti-Semitism is not
dismissed out of hand or ignored.
References to a wider problem of antiSemitism among left-wing activists an
issue on which Corbyn has been under
mounting pressure to act were also missing in the final article, Buzzfeed said.
We on the left must stop procrastinating and tackle oppression within our own
ranks, especially anti-Jewish oppression,
Shah was said to have written.
In another change, referencing Israel in
comparison to Nazi Germany was replaced with referring to Israel and Hitler.
MP John Woodcock said: This is incredibly serious I feel sick if this is as reported.
Needs full explanation of whether true and
who edited.

Familys Facebook appeal for prayers to save Liora

A HENDON mother has asked
the Jewish community to pray
for her 20-year-old daughter
who is on life support in hospital after suffering a bleed to
the brain.
Lauren Rosenberg [pictured, left] was left hoping for
a miracle this week for Liora, a
former JFS and Hasmonean
pupil, who is also suffering
from pneumonia, was taken ill
and admitted to hospital before Pesach.
She was continuing to
fight by Monday with mother
Lauren, who is originally from
France, describing her anguish on her Facebook page.
She wrote: Please pray, I
know my daughter is alive,
even though at the moment
she is on life support and has
no reaction or movement.
We had so many little miracles so far I was told that
my daughter will die on Monday, then on Tuesday, then on
Wednesday, but thank God

she is still with us.

Doctors wanted to do the
last test to confirm she is brain
dead, but till now they have
been unable to do the test as
Lioras sodium level is too
high. Thank God for this.
A Just Giving page set up
by a family friend on Monday
has so far raised around
20,000 for the Hatzola Ambulance Service.
It reads: Liora had a bleed
to the brain and has pneumonia, they said she wouldn't
last the night and she did and
is continuing to fight.
Now her heart is weak and
they have changed her name
to Chaya leah Rachel bat Esther. She is in critical condition. They say that she has no
brain activity and they want to
turn off her life support.
Lets pull together, storm
the heavens and donate anything that we can even if its
small in the name of Liora

Lioras family has chosen
to raise money for the charity Hatzola to fund an ambulance. The Rosenberg Family
send thanks to all.
People from around the
world have also offered messages of support for the
Rosenberg family.
Yaacov Rab-eye Bee Benzaquen posted: I was at the
Kotel this afternoon with my
boys and I prayed for Liora
and her family.
Vanessa Lelah, from Sydney, said: "Liora has been
added to mesheberach
prayers for the sick in Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast,
Singapore.
Tali Silas, a friend of Lioras
sister, Fiona, set up a Twitter
correspondence asking people to pray for her.
She said: Ive been
speaking to Fiona and she is
convinced a miracle will happen, the whole family are.
They have been overwhelmed by the amount of
support they have had and
are so grateful. They need all
the help they can get."
Her family are also asking
people to pray for her recovery using the Hebrew name

Top universities may quit NUS

over new anti-Israel president
BRITAINS LEADING universities could sever ties with the National Union of Students (NUS)
after it elected a left-wing president who refused to condemn
Islamic State and attacked
Zionist-led media outlets.
Students at Oxford and Cambridge universities have said
they will hold referenda to determine whether they should remain associates of the NUS.
On Tuesday, Cambridge Universitys Jewish Society voted in
an official motion to support its
university leaving the first Jewish society on a UK campus to
take an official stance
Malia Bouattia, 28, was made
the first black Muslim president
of the national body last week.
She courted controversy in the
past for attacking Zionist-led
media outlets and suggesting
non-peaceful resistance is the
most suitable solution to the
Palestinian conflict with Israel.
In 2011, while she was still
studying at the University of
Birmingham, Ms Bouattia coauthored an article in which she
said that the university was a
Zionist outpost in British higher
education.
More recently, during her role
as the NUS black students officer, Bouattia voted down a mo-

tion to condemn Islamic State,

on the grounds that doing so
would be blatant Islamophobia. Speaking to Channel 4
News on Tuesday, she said:I
have a problem with the continued occupation of the Palestinian
people and them being stripped
of their rights. Israel as it behaves
is problematic to me.
News of the president-elects
previous comments caused
widespread outrage on university
campuses, prompting Jewish
student leaders to pen an open
letter to her, demanding she clarify her position towards them.
In response Bouattia claimed
she had been misrepresented,
adding that she was anti-Zionist
but not anti-Semitic.
An UJS spokesman said: We
are not yet abandoning our
longstanding relationship with
NUS. Its about a lot more than
the president, and we still have
allies and Jewish students within
the broader national leadership
to support in making change
from within. Nor are we yet prepared to work with this particular
NUS president.
Unless Malia takes the steps
repeatedly outlined to her, including in person, many Jewish
students will feel that they are
unable to engage with an NUS

Tate protest at Israel libels

UK-BASED pro-Israel lawyers
have written to culture secretary John Whittingdale about
Tate Modern Gallerys decision to continue selling books
alleged to contain serious
blood libels of the country.
Jonathan Turner, chair of
UK Lawyers for Israel, raised
concerns with Whittingdale
on Monday about books by
University of Exeters Profes-

sor Ilan Papp and Harvards

Noam Chomsky, both wellknown critics of Israel.
Turner specifically raised
objections to Chomsky and
Papps On Palestine, which
has chapters on A Brief History of Israels Incremental
Genocide and Gazas Torment:
Israels Crimes, Our Responsibilities, which he said presented extreme viewpoints.

Conference appeal fails

Elected: Malia Bouattia says Israels behaviour is problematic to me

under her leadership. In the

coming days and weeks, any engagement UJS does have with
Malia will exclusively address securing the steps we have already
demanded regarding a proper
apology and clear distancing
from her earlier rhetoric.
Although only in its infancy,
the campaign to disaffiliate
from the NUS has gained support from students studying at
the universities of Durham, York,
Westminster, Birmingham, Edinburgh, the London School of

Economics and Kings College

London.
Since Bouattias election at the
conference, several other student groups have launched social-media
campaigns
on
Facebook, in which they have encouraged their universities to
cancel their NUS membership.
Following her election, members of the audience applauded student delegates for
suggesting Holocaust Memorial Day should be shunned because it is not inclusive.

TWO PROFESSORS have lost

a High Court challenge over
Southampton Universitys handling of their bid for a controversial conference on Israel.
The professors challenged
decisions that have effectively
blocked the conference being
held for two years running,
amid fears it could lead to disorder on campus.
Professor Oren Ben-Dor

was born in Israel and

teaches philosophy and law,
while Professor Suleiman
Sharkh grew up in Gaza and
lectures in engineering.
They argued that academic freedom was at stake.
But Mrs Justice Whipple,
sitting in London, rejected
their challenges and declared: There is no large
principle at stake here.

Father-of-six Daniel
Beller, who spent time in
South Africa before moving to Raanana in 1997,
became ill only six
months ago, and has left
a devastated community
in central Israel, many of
whom are British olim.
Beller, once suggested
as a replacement for
Lord Sacks, was described as a bridge be-

tween religious and secular Jews in Israel. He

was rabbi of Shivtei Yisrael synagogue.
He was a real community rabbi, said Britishborn shul chairman
Jeremy Kaye, who knew
Beller for 12 years. He
was a rare soul with a

At the funeral, Kaye said

There was so much

Biblical Hebrew GCSE to continue

BIBLICAL HEBREW as a GCSE and A-level qualification is set to continue
beyond 2017 after a publisher and exam board agreed to take it on.
The announcement, greeted with relief by Jewish educators this week,
ends uncertainty after awarding body OCR last year said the ancient language was one of several being
dropped from its stable of courses.
Additional government funding totalling 1.8million for teacher training
is believed to have helped to broker
the deal, in which publisher Pearson
and qualifications provider AQA
agreed to continue offering the course.
The new qualifications will be available for first teaching from September
2018, with the first awards in 2020.
OCR will continue awarding until summer 2019, meaning that there will be Secure: GCSE Biblical Hebrew
no gap in provision.
Only 36 students took Biblical Hebrew at A-Level last year and AQA
chief executive Andrew Hall acknowledged significant barriers to its
continued offering of both Biblical and Modern Hebrew.
Chief executive William Burton said: It was not an easy decision to
stop offering them and is something we have thought long and hard

about. We will do all that we can to ensure a smooth handover of work

in progress, existing Intellectual Property Rights and the names of
schools and examiners that wish to continue offering the subject.

JFS old boys make gown fit for a prince

George wearing his My First Years gown

TWO FORMER JFS students who run a childrens clothing company faced unprecedented demand this week after Prince
George wore one of their robes to meet

have sold out of the princes 27 personalised Gingham Robe, but are letting customers pre-order from the next batch
through their My First Years website.
The pair, who launched the company six
years ago after leaving university, said they
used a bit of plush, a dash of determina-

tion and an ounce of ingenuity to create a

business offering personalised baby gifts.
After last Fridays meeting between the
worlds most powerful politician and most
adorable royal, they said the sight of the
young prince wearing their clothing was
extremely rewarding, adding: Its a
dream come true.
Prince George, born in 2013, was allowed
to stay up 15 minutes past his bedtime in to
meet the president and first lady at Kensington Palace. It was Obamas last official visit

Charedi school
report attacked
A ROW has erupted between
strictly-Orthodox leaders and
Ofsted after the inspectorate
criticised a Charedi school for
incorrect content by omitting reference to evolution or
events before 5,776 years ago.
Community representatives
said it was an outrageous attack on freedom of religion,
acknowledging that Ofsteds
criticism of the 240-pupil Getters Talmud Torah will affect
every Charedi school.
Inspectors
said:
The
schools ethos policy promotes
the teaching of incorrect content. The policy stipulates that
our curricula for science, geography and history will not
reference evolution or prehistoric events that would de
facto pre-date the creation of
the world 5,776 years ago.
Therefore the curriculum
still does not ensure pupils
have sufficient or correct
knowledge and understanding
in the required areas.
The angry reaction came
from Interlink Foundation,
which represents Charedi
schools in London. Joel Friedman, head of policy and strategy, said: We are taking this
matter extremely seriously.
This outrageous attack on
the freedom of a religious minority has precedent only in
bygone eras we wish not to be
reminded of.

Orthodox gun case teacher freed Blue noses at the ready!

A STRICTLY-Orthodox teacher
from Stamford Hill has been
freed after seven months in jail
for the illegal possession of
firearms.
Patrick El-Bez, of Leadale
Road, whose wife Linda was
also imprisoned, learned on
Monday he could be reunited
with his children, who had been
taken into care.
El-Bez, 46, a French national
who taught at the Satmar
School in Stamford Hill, was
given a suspended sentence
after his legal team argued he
had not known possessing the
old pistols was illegal.
Barristers Jonathan Goldberg
QC and Jeffrey Israel said ElBez was of exemplary character who had no criminal
connections or convictions had
been unaware of UK law and
never used the guns in anger or
taken them from his home.
A tip-off from the teachers

Firearms from the US Civil War, similar to Patrick El-Bezs collection

sister, Rachel Bulbil, led to a police raid last year, during which
officers found single-shot muzzle loaders from the American
Civil War and ammunition,
alongside two Samurai swords.
El-Bez subsequently spent
seven months in Pentonville
Prison. His wife Linda also spent
four months behind bars before
the Crown Prosecution Service
offered no evidence against her.
Goldberg argued that El-Bez

was in bad health, suffering

from haemophilia and hepatitis,
and his mistake had brought catastrophe to him and his family.
Judge Nicholas Browne said
although the law required a
minimum sentence of five years
imprisonment, exceptional circumstances apply justice has
to be tempered with mercy.
El-Bez was sentenced to 15
months imprisonment suspended for two years.

MPs Israel charity plea

A GROUP of 25 MPs have written to international development minister Justine Greening
urging her support to fund the
non-political Save a Childs
Heart (SACH) organisation.
It follows news that some
projects funded by the Conflict
Stability and Security Fund
(CSSF) in Israel and the Palestinian Territories have ended and
Greenings department is considering further support for
strong coexistence projects between Israelis and Palestinians.
We are writing to put forth
SACH to be considered due to

ground, the letter says.
SACH was founded in Israel
in 1996 to improve the quality

The group brings children to
Israel for heart surgery from
countries where adequate medical care is unavailable and
physicians and nurses from
those countries to provide them

Kinders child refugee proposal rejected Reuben brothers top Rich List
A PLAN to bring 3,000 child refugees to the
UK has been voted down, after being put
forward by one of Sir Nicholas Wintons
kindertransport refugees.
The government killed off the proposal
tabled by Jewish peer Lord Alf Dubs, who arrived in Britain from Prague in 1938.
MPs voted 294 to 276, a majority of 18, to
reject the amendment to the Immigration
Bill. A handful of Tory MPs raised concerns in
the debate over the Governments position
and Heidi Allen, one of the leading critics,
said after the vote that she had abstained,
describing it as the hardest decision.
The amendment has now been effectively
killed off as it was certified as engaging financial privilege, meaning the Lords have
no choice but to back down after it was rejected by the Commons.
Lord Dubs made another attempt to force
the Governments hand. When the Bill returned to the Lords on Tuesday, he proposed
a revised amendment that removes the reference to 3,000 refugees.

Lord Dubs, whose amendment was blocked

Instead Dubs asked the Government to

resettle a specified number of lone child
refugees to be determined in consultation
with local authorities.
Speaking outside the chamber, Labour
refugee taskforce chairwoman Yvette
Cooper said: It is disappointing that the

Government has rejected the Dubs amendment albeit with a reduced majority.
Thousands of children are sleeping rough
in Europe tonight, vulnerable to exploitation
and abuse and Britain should not be turning
its back, she said.
Lord Dubs became friends with the British
Schindler Nicholas Winton, who saved him
alongside 668 other children from the Nazis.
Earlier on Monday before the vote, Harry
Jacobi, one of Britains most prominent rabbis and also a refugee from Nazi Germany,
also backed the amendment while meeting
Dubs and Cooper.
The 90-year-old, who escaped to the UK,
said after the unsuccessful vote: I am so very
saddened and upset by the votes in the
House of Commons, before drawing comparisons to his escape from the Nazis.
He added: This must have been what Parliament was like in 1938 after the Evian Conference, when refugees were refused
admission into the country.

LEICESTER TAXPAYERS have had
to fork out almost 9,000 in legal

Figures released following a
Freedom of Information request
this month showed that 7,355 +

2014 decision to boycott some
trade from Israel. But the cost of

in-house counsel was not included, so the true cost is likely

to be much higher. Grassroots advocacy group Jewish Human

In response to the FoI request,
Leicester City Council chiefs said:

Israel releases 12-year-old stab plot girl

A 12-YEAR-OLD Palestinian girl,
imprisoned by Israel after she
confessed to planning a stabbing attack in a West Bank settlement, returned home on
Sunday after she was freed early
following an appeal.
Dima al-Wawi is believed to
be the youngest female Palestinian ever imprisoned.
She was greeted by about 80
relatives at her familys house in
Halhoul, a village near Hebron, a
West Bank city that has been a
focal point of violence. Relatives
decorated the house with balloons and posters.
Banners by the Islamic terrorist group Hamas along with the
Fatah party of Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas adorned
the walls.
I am happy to be out. Prison
is bad, Dima said. During
my time in prison, I missed my

family.
According to court documents provided by the military,
Dima approached the West
Bank settlement of Carmei Tsur
on 9 February with a knife hidden under a shirt.
A security guard ordered her

to halt, and a resident instructed

her to lie on the ground and told
her to give up the knife, which
she did.
An amateur video clip shown
on Israeli TV showed the resident asking the girl, who was
wearing her school uniform,
whether she had come to kill

Jews, and she said yes.

She later pleaded guilty to
attempted manslaughter in a
plea bargain and was sentenced to four and a half
months in prison. She was
freed early after an appeal.
Her case put Israels military
justice system in a tough spot
because of her young age.
The incident came amid
seven months of violence in
which Palestinians have killed 28
Israelis and two Americans in
stabbings, shootings and carramming attacks in Israel and the
West Bank.
At least 190 Palestinians have
died from Israeli fire. Israel says
most were attackers, and the
rest died in clashes with Israeli
security forces.
Many of the Palestinian
attackers have been teenagers
or in their early 20s.

research has revealed.
The fascinating insight, which
claims that most Ashkenazi
Jews descend from Turkey, was
made possible by state-of-theart computer modelling and
genetic techniques.

Feel free
to come
and see!

The project, led by Israeliborn Dr Eran Elhaik, pinpointed

Iskenaz, Eskenaz and Ashanaz
three Turkish villages on an ancient Silk Road route which still
exist today as part of the original Ashkenazi homeland.
It is the largest genomic
study ever carried out on
Ashkenazi Jews, and shows that
most of todays population are

the descendants of Greeks, Iranians and others who colonised

what is now northern Turkey
more than 2,000 years ago.
Elhaik shows that locals were
converted to Judaism by Jews
from Persia, whose empire was
then home to the worlds
largest Jewish communities.
Concurrent analysis of Yiddish
suggests it was originally a Slavic

language developed by Jewish

tradesmen travelling along the

scribed to her the reflective mood I wanted the

painting to convey and told her that I wanted the
setting to be Westminster Abbey because of the
historical significance and with her standing on
the 13th-century Cosmati Pavement as she and
all her ancestors did for their coronations.
With a career in portraiture spanning 29 years,
Heimans knows when his subject is relaxed and
approving of his concept and this was the case
with the Queen, whom he describes as a fantastic sitter. Interestingly, Heimans, who was suited
and booted for his encounter (the only time Ive

ever worn a tie) was told to say May I take control now maam once the Queen was in situ, but
knowing that Australians are famous for getting
it wrong with royalty, he let Her Majesty lead.
She did, however, stand for 10 minutes
wearing the Robe of State which is remarkable considering its weight and she
understood all I hoped to achieve,
adds Heimans, who understandably
knew a great deal more about the
Queens family than she did about his.
Given more time over the cucumber
sandwiches, he reckons he might have
told her about his mother Josette fleeing from Lebanon in 1956 ahead of
the civil war, when anti-Jewish hostilities were at their height, or talked about
his father Frank, who was born while his
parents were in hiding in Holland under
Nazi occupation.
Unlike so many of our other family members who were taken to the camps, my grandparents were protected by a Catholic brother and
sister in the small village of Tilbury who saved their
lives and which enabled them to leave after liberation, says Heimans.
Resettled in Australia in 1955, my dad became
a documentary maker with a passion for Jewish
history, which led him to make a film in 86 about
Theresienstadt called Paradise Camp.
Though he is a traditionalist only when it comes
to his painting, Heimans faith is very important
to him and the high holy days are honoured,
though it is his love of conceptual themes that led
him in his early years to paint the portrait of an
Auschwitz survivor.
Capturing the very essence of his many subjects in the surrounds of their life story has made
Heimans a sought-after portraitist in his homeland

13

Classic Heimans: The pianist and conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy painted in a surreal concert-hall setting

where he was awarded the Order of Australia

MOA, but living in Herne Hill now has also
boosted his UK commissions, some of them Jewish related.
Howard Jacobson is one and in a style reminiscent of the great Dutch masters, Heimans painted
the authors portrait ahead of the release of his
book Shylock is My Name. The moment I met
him I thought I must paint this guy because his
face is fascinating, says Heimans, who has gone
on to do portraits of all the authors revisiting
Shakespeares plays in prose to mark the 400th

anniversary of the Bards death this month. Jewish

authors Tracy Chevalier (Girl With The Pearl Earring) and Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl) are among the
subjects who are on show and with brush still in
hand Heimans is now capturing Shakespearean
actors Dame Judi Dench and Sir Ben Kingsley.
Time spent with any of them can never compare with 60 minutes with the Queen, but
Heimans memory is preserved forever on canvas.

WE MUST SHOW MORE

IMPARTIALITY ON ISRAEL
People who use the persecution of
Palestinians as reason to hate Jews believe
in their cause. Its true, Palestinians do
suffer at Israeli hands. But, of course, their
provocation is intense.
Palestinians murder Jews or agree that
they should be murdered Jews whose
crime is to sit on a bus or vote for a certain
party. But the problem is no matter how
great these pressures, they are only mitigating ones, not excuses.
Evil puts an individual under great pressure; else it would be madness to be evil.
Madness means without choice, which is
not what evil is. And so forgiveness cannot
be inferred from mitigating factors until
you acknowledge them, and apologise.
Sympathy cannot be given otherwise.
No one is perfect, so contrition would
take some of the hatred out of the opinions
of our opponents, well-intentioned
enemies and anti-Semitic ones.
We must not get too defensive
despite the provocations we face. An
apology shows the strength to say:
I know where I have gone wrong, implying
you know where you havent gone
wrong, too. It shows that your cause is
scrutinised and where you dont
apologise you make a stand.
People would think more highly of us if
we showed more impartiality.

March]. On balance I found Conservative

minister Robert Halfons stay argument
contained the usual threats of the consequences of an EU exit vote as mentioned
so much by David Cameron, George
Osborne, Lord Kinnock, Jeremy Corbyn
and so on. Just about the only things that
have not been discussed is whether a visitation of locusts, darkness and the slaying
of the firstborn on 24 June will happen as
a result of a leave vote.
In other words, he put forward the
same hollow arguments as other
doomsayers. I am still puzzled as to how he
can mention the EU and democracy in the
same article, but thats another story.
Halfons fellow Conservative minister
Teresa Villiers, on the other hand, put
forward a lucid and reasonable argument
as to why this country needs its independence back. There is a big world
outside Europe and the situation with the
steel industry illustrates precisely what
belonging to the EU costs the UK in
terms of jobs.
Ms Villers didnt clarify that the 19billion
cost equates to around 621 for every
second of every minute of every hour of
every day of every week of every month of
every year that we belong. It sounds more
understandable that way than a lump sum
of 19bn. I can just imagine Mercedes
Benz and BMW and Volkswagen refusing
to sell the UK their overpriced cars as a
result of us voting no. Can you?

occupations just like our own. They were persecuted and brutally murdered in the most horrific
and still barely believable way, not for anything
they had done but simply for who they were.
For we who, by an accident of birth, were
spared the unimaginable horror, the least we can
do is gather for part of an afternoon to pay simple
tribute to these people some completely forgotten, others who were part of our own families.
Last year we marked the 70th anniversary of the
end of the Shoah, but this year is arguably even
more important. Seventy-one years after the end
of the Second World War, the generation of survivors is inevitably passing, so it is morally imperative that we take a short time out of the weekend
to remember and reflect, to offer our respect to
six million people like ourselves and to issue a
ringing call to society to reaffirm loud and clear
that we will never allow such evil to succeed again.

I find it very encouraging that, in a community

which is disparate and diverse, this is a noble
cause we can all embrace. I found it inspirational
that at last years commemoration, held at Barnet
Copthall for the first time, so many organisations
that would not often join in a united cause did so.
Despite the challenges all around us, it is
wrong to compare our time with the rise of
Nazism in the 1930s. In that dark time in history,
too, many governments incited the hatred,
whereas governments now actively combat it.
However, we cannot ignore the shocking upsurge of anti-Semitism from Islamic extremists and
a worrying number of individuals on the far left.
As president of the Board of Deputies of
British Jews, it is my job to call out anti-Semitism,
to publicise and shame those who perpetrate
the lies and tropes dating back to Nazism and
even the Middle Ages. We ensure the government and law enforcement agencies are aware
of, and taking action against, those who attempt
to spread hate.
We are blessed to live in a democratic, tolerant and diverse country, with legislation that
protects us against the haters but we must
never take our safety, security and freedom for
granted. We must stand together to protect
them, which provides another important reason
for Jews to gather in their thousands on 8 May
as a tangible sign that, as long as we stand to-

gether, the haters cannot and will not win.

The date is also the anniversary of VE Day,
when we celebrated victory in Europe. So this is
an appropriate time to remember that Jews
were not just victims of Nazism they were also
some of the bravest fighters against it. Many
thousands of Jews, including my late father,
joined the British armed forces at the start of the
Second World War and fought for their country
against the Germans and the other Axis powers.
We must never forget that it is thanks to that remarkable generation of ex-servicemen and
women that we are able to enjoy the freedoms
we do today. In the words of the famous epitaph
of John Maxwell Edmonds:
When you go home, tell them of us and say
For their tomorrow, we gave our today.
Sunday 8 May will be a solemn but important
communal occasion. We will show solidarity, we
will be united in our prayers and thoughts for
those who perished and we will also stand together as a symbol of our determination that
never again will this happen to the Jewish people
or any part of humanity.
Coming together once a year is simple
enough, but standing together in force of numbers is the most powerful statement we can make.

A union synonymous with

austerity and stagnation
THE ARGUMENTS about Brexit are complicated
enough without adding new layers of complexity.
When invited to take part in the Great Brexit
Debate at Kingston Synagogue on 15 May, I
assumed they wanted me to enumerate the
leave arguments, given that my paper, the Daily
Mail has been solidly behind Brexit and I have
written extensively on why leaving is not the big
deal the project fear stay campaign would have
you believe.
Then the flyer arrived with senior barrister and
prosecutor Ros Wright QC listed as for and yours
truly as against. This has sowed seeds of enormous confusion. The use of for and against or
yes and no was specifically ruled out by the
Electoral Commission to avoid a lack of clarity as
to what will be voted on 23 June and to remove
any positive and negative connotations.
In spite of some of the hard-core propaganda,
we have heard from the Downing Street-backed
stay campaign, it seems that citizens do deserve to more clearly hear the leave arguments.
There has been much fuss, for instance, about
President Obamas suggestion that it would take
five to 10 years to negotiate a trade deal with
the US should we vote leave. However, the
Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership,
the EU trade deal with the US, is highly controversial. It has not been signed, let alone ratified, and
is opposed in one way or another by all the 2016
US presidential candidates. And without a trade
deal, both the UK and the US would conduct trade
according to the World Trade Organisation rules,

Israels national
musical treasure,
in a one-off summer
concert in aid of

which cover almost all physical products. So very

little would change.
Much has been made by the stay campaign of
how the EU has managed to keep the peace in
Europe for six decades since it was formed. This is
misleading, too. It neglects to mention that the
union was originally conceived as an economic,
not a security organisation, and has little to do with
defence issues. Europe has been involved in wars
since the formation of the union and it has been
far from unified. When the US and Britain invaded
Iraq in 2003, France was on the sidelines and
being ridiculed in the US as a surrender monkey.
When Europe intervened in the former Yugoslavia after the horrific Srebrenica massacre of
Bosnian Muslims in 1995, and later in Kosovo, it
was largely under the NATO umbrella. Moreover,
until the Berlin war came down and the accession
Eastern bloc countries joined the EU, there was an
Iron Curtain across Europe and a Cold War, which
saw large populations oppressed and killed in
Hungary in 1956 and regular shootings of people
seeking to make the journey across the Berlin Wall.
The most divisive event in Europe now is not
the free movement of jihadists across borders (as
seen in the Paris and Belgium terrorist attacks) but
the eurozone structure. The madcap economics of
one size fits all across 19 core Eurozone nations
has created divisive forces every bit as dangerous
as the rise of fascism in the 1920s and 1930s.
Let us take Greece, a country I have visited
almost every year of the last decade to attend
Athens economic and oil seminar. The impact of

German-imposed austerity on that benighted

country has poisoned its prosperity and politics.
Youth unemployment exceeds 50 percent and
adult joblessness is endemic. The once delightful
streets of Athens are threatened by right-wing fanatics from Golden Dawn. Polls conducted by the
US Anti-Defamation League show Greece to be
the nation with the most anti-Semitism in Europe.
The rise is right-wing movements across the EU,
largely a result of economic dislocation and fears
of immigration, is frightening. In Hungary, the rise
of the virulently anti-Semitic Jobbik party has
pushed the country to the right. In France, Marine
Le Pens Front National runs high in opinion polls.
It claims to be anti-immigration and not anti-Semitic, but much of its apparatus is staffed by antiJewish elements who served her father.
In Germany, weve seen the rapid rise of the
right-wing AfD party, with its fascist emblems and
echoes of Nazism. Even in the normally tolerant
Scandinavian countries, Denmark and Sweden,
there has been a worrying rise of the political right.
Far from being the wonderful, peace loving and
prosperous union portrayed by the stay campaign vision, the EU represents the shattered
dreams of many nations. Yes, leave would be
hard and the economic benefits of the unknown
are impossible to measure. But being part of a
union that has delivered a decade of stagnation
and economic misery to millions is no longer attractive. Changing it from the inside equally is all
but impossible because of the democratic deficit.
But that is a whole separate argument.

The most moving Dayenu

youre ever likely to hear
MY LATE father-in-law, Dr Benjamin Harry
Lawrence, spent the last eight years of his life
as a resident of Lady Sarah Cohen House in
Friern Barnet, run by Jewish Care.
Shortly after his arrival we, as a family, attended the communal seder services at the
home, run by David Lerner. I knew David well
as we had worked together on the founding
committee for Wolfson Hillel School in Southgate.
Sadly Davids father, also a resident of the
home, passed away and David handed over responsibility of the communal seder services on
the first floor to me. So, for the last eight years
of my father-in-laws life, I had the honour and
privilege of taking the communal seder services.
Since my father-in-law passed away three
years ago, my family and I have continued to
take the services as a thank you to the staff and
volunteers at Lady Sarah Cohen House who
gave my father-in-law the most wonderful care
in his later years.
My father-in-law was a GP at a practice in
Barking and a medical officer for the Port of
Tilbury and very often had to visit incoming
cargo ships to diagnose ill seamen and decide
whether they were safe to come into the country.
As we join residents and tell the story of the
Exodus each year, I remember that, like my late
father-in-law, each person at the table has their

life lived and stories to tell.

There are artists, pharmacists, former mayoresses, doctors, ex-servicemen and women,
surgeons, lawyers, home makers and fabulous
bakers who all share the seder together at the
home. It is humbling to be in the company of
people who have led such interesting lives and
lived through major world events and to support them now.
My family goes en masse to Lady Sarah over
the two nights to join the residents and sing
with them at the seder table. Its a intergenerational event, as seders should be.
Meals are served at a regular time so that
those attending can keep their routines while
enjoying a seder meal and service. So we start
the seder early, tell the story and then move
through the cups and the meal.
Then our family goes home and has our
smaller seder together again, having shared a
communal seder with the 30 residents, staff,
volunteers and other relatives from that floor at
the home. I feel privileged to have four seders
with my family each Pesach.
Many residents on the at the home where we
take the seder live with advanced dementia. It
is profoundly moving and meaningful to watch
their faces and see them smiling as they sing
or mouth the words to Dayenu and Echad Mi
Yodeha, which have been hardwired into us
from an early age.
The songs, together with the sights, smells

and tastes of the foods on the table, the

matzah, burnt egg and shank bone, the taste
of charoset and bitter herbs, have the power to
stir the memories.
For many it is difficult to share their life stories, but for that moment they are connected to
the present, others in the room and to their own
Jewish and personal identity.
We know that these moments can take people back to memories of years gone by and
seders shared with family and friends, perhaps
hosting seders for 10 or 20 people like many
Jewish News readers have done in recent days.
We spend as much time as possible at the
home through the year, attending and helping
at the Shabbat morning services.
The building has been extensively modified
and the Betty & Asher Loftus Centre has the
beautiful new Wohl Synagogue which is full for
Shabbat and festivals, where we recently held
a kiddush to celebrate the birth of our granddaughter. Although I wont see my 60th birthday again, I am sometimes one of the youngest
in shul so they often ask me to do Anim Zmirot!
I write this to share what is a very rewarding
experience for me and to encourage more people to do this next year.
Sitting and talking, reading for or playing
cards with the residents or visit older people
within our community makes a huge difference
to everyone involved.
And that, after all, is what Pesach is about.

NUS presidents dangerously

flawed view of anti-Semitism
IN HER recent Guardian piece (Im the new NUS
president and no, Im not an anti-Semitic Isis
sympathiser), Malia Bouattia sought to draw a
line under recent allegations. She claims to have
always been a strong campaigner against
racism and fascism in all its forms and says there
is no place for anti-Semitism in the student
movement, or in society. These are nice sentiments, but she will do little to dispel the deep
concerns already expressed about her appointment. Part of the problem is that she has an extremely flawed understanding of anti-Semitism.
No doubt, she is capable of recognising its
most obvious manifestations, when anti-Jewish
hatred comes dressed in swastikas, skullcaps and
jackboots. But what preceded the death camps,
the ghettos and the yellow stars were the conspiracy theories about malevolent Jewish
power, and pernicious allegations of Jewish control. They culminated in the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, a notorious forgery purporting to
reveal a template for Jewish world domination.
When Malia claims that there are Zionist led
media outlets in the UK, that Birmingham University is a Zionist outpost in British higher education or that the Prevent policy is fuelled by all
manner of Zionist and neo-con lobbies, she is
invoking the same sinister and incendiary language found in the Protocols. If she cannot see
why Jewish (and other) students are so aghast at
her language, she needs cultural retraining.
Yet for Malia, critiquing the Zionist control of
the media is akin to being critical of media outlets that unquestioningly support Israels actions
and maltreatment of Palestinians. This is highly

questionable on two grounds. It is firstly rare for

media outlets to support unquestioningly any
countrys foreign policies, including Israels.
The BBC, the most influential shaper of public
opinion in this country, is quite obviously no right
wing, neo-conservative version of Fox News.
Similarly, the Guardian, the Independent, the
Daily Mail, the FT and the Mirror have rarely
given Israel a free pass. Deep criticisms of Israel
abound in these, and other, publications.
Certainly, most media outlets do accept Israels right to exist in peace with its neighbours.
But if that is the issue, it is surely one for Ms
Bouattia, not the media. She needs to ask why it
is fine to have dozens of Muslim and Arab states
but not a single Jewish one. In any case, she has
completely misunderstood what she claims to be
talking about. Zionism is simply a movement for
Jewish national self determination and cultural
renaissance. It recognises that Jews are a nation
like any other, and one which seeks the same
rights as any other recognised group.
If Bouattia wants to take issue with modern Israeli politics, the occupation or settlement policies, she is naturally free to do so. But this is not
criticising Zionism per se. Indeed even the most
slender research would reveal that mainstream
Zionists have always welcomed co-existence with
Israels Arab neighbours, including the Palestinians. Most Israelis and Zionists support two states
for two peoples and full civic equality for the Jewish states Arab population.
Malia claims that Zionism, religion and ethnicity must not be seen as one and the same.
Again, this is ignorant for Zionism is intrinsic to

Jewish identity and draws on numerous ancient

religious and historical sources. Almost all Jews
around the world feel a deep connection to Israel and express it in various ways.
It is fairly disingenuous of her to distance Zionism from Jewishness by observing that Zionist
politics are held by people from a variety of different backgrounds and faiths. People from
many backgrounds supported the American Civil
Rights campaign during the turbulent years of
the 1960s. But attacks on the civil rights movement struck most forcefully at black Americans
because it was most deeply embedded in their
collective consciousness. They were its primary
beneficiaries and had most to lose from its failure.
The same is true of Zionism for the Jews.
If Ms Bouattia had wanted to advance the
cause of Israeli-Palestinian dialogue, she could
have offered constructive proposals, such as
bringing their student representative together on
campus or building links with Palestinian moderates in the territories.
But instead she has suggested that Palestinian
justice can only be built through violent resistance rather than peace talks and non-violent protest. For an NUS president to endorse
terrorism is appalling enough. But if she welcomes the murder and maiming of Israeli Jews,
she can hardly be surprised if Jewish students
here turn against her.
Her article offered no real statements of regret
for past comments. In essence, her political ideologies and beliefs remain unchanged.
If so, one can only predict that the clamour of
opposition to her will continue unabated.

OPINION: LONDON DECIDES: COUNTDOWN TO 5 MAY

Leading mayoral candidates

make final pitch for your vote
Like too many Jewish Londoners I am committed to stronger ties
I know how descrimination feels between London and Tel Aviv

y story will be familiar to many Jewish

Londoners. My parents moved to
Britain from Pakistan in search of a
better life, just like so many Jewish people
who arrived here generations before.
When my parents arrived in Britain, they
worked around the clock to rebuild from
scratch. They had an incredible work ethic,
a respect for education and desperately
wanted their children to have the opportunities to fulfil their potential. Now Im running
for mayor because I want all Londoners to get
the opportunities that our city gave me.
Like too many Jewish Londoners, I know
from personal experience how it feels to be
discriminated against because of your faith.
Shamefully, anti-Semitism and Islamophobia
are both on the rise in London. Synagogues
have to hire private security guards as
do Jewish schools. Its simply not acceptable
that this is happening in 21st century London.
I will always protect communities whose
beliefs and practices attract the inexplicable
hostility of others, and Ill get to grips
with religious hate crimes. Ill make tackling
hate crimes a far higher priority for the
Metropolitan police, and Ill work with London universities to ensure that anti-Semitic or
Islamophobic preachers of hate are not welcome and are not given a platform for their
poisonous views.
As mayor, I will be the British Muslim who
finally roots out extremism and radicalisation

As mayor, I will be

who finally roots
out extremism

Sadiq at a mock
seder at Alyth
Synagogue

Sadiq Khan
Labour candidate
from British society. I will support mainstream
Muslims to challenge extremists and work
with the internet providers to ban
extremist websites.
Extremism is anathema to Londons multicultural character and tolerant soul. It doesnt
matter whether youre Jewish, Muslim, black,
white, gay or straight we are all
Londoners, and we have so many concerns in
common.
The job of the mayor is to tackle those concerns head on a housing crisis that is pricing
young people out of the city, air pollution that
is claiming lives prematurely and streets that
need to be made safer for our kids.
I relish the chance to face those challenges
in City Hall, and to stand up for all Londoners
no matter who they are, where theyre from
or what they believe.

ondon would not be London without its

Jewish community and I am extremely
proud of my own small share in that heritage. As mayor, I will celebrate and protect it.
But London has a problem. Anti-Semitism
is on the rise, sometimes overt, sometimes in
the guise of anti-Zionism. In Paris, Jews are
leaving in record numbers because they feel
they dont have a future in France. That must
never happen in our city.
So, as mayor, I will make it absolutely clear
where London stands.
I will instruct the Met to take a zero-tolerance approach to hate crime. And in Barnet,
for example, which is one of several areas that
has a particular problem with antiSemitic attacks, I have committed funds for
extra police. I will also maintain overall officer
numbers at 32,000, put 500 extra officers on
the Tube and will back the Met to increase the
number of armed officers.
I will also be an unambiguously pro-Israel
mayor. I am committed to even stronger ties
between London and the Middle Easts only
democracy and will support a major Tel Aviv
festival in our city next year.
The security of Londoners is my number
one priority, but Jewish Londoners want what
we all want: housing thats affordable to a
young couple on an average salary, a transport system that can cope with our booming
population, air thats safe to breathe.
My Action Plan for Greater London will

deliver more homes, better transport, cleaner
air and safer streets. Its a plan to keep our
economy strong and its all paid for while
freezing council tax.
Crucially, its a plan that can actually be
delivered.
London depends on central government for
its powers and funding, so the next mayor will
have to work with this Conservative government to secure the best possible deal. My
record shows thats exactly what Ill do.
As an MP, Ive stood up for my constituents, and at the last election they backed
me
with
the
biggest
increased
majority of any MP in the country. Now
I want the chance to deliver for London. Back
me on 5 May and I will a make a great city
greater still.

DESCENT INTO HELL

Stephen Applebaum talks to the director of the Oscar-winning film Son of Saul about the
anger that drove him to lay bare as never before the horrific details of life in Auschwitz

ne of the most lauded first features in recent memory, Son of Saul swept to
Oscar success in the Best Foreign Language Film category in February, having
previously won the prestigious Grand
Prix du Jury in Cannes last year, and, in a first for
Hungary, a Golden Globe.
What makes this run of success so impressive is
that Laszlo Nemes, the films Jewish-Hungarian director and co-writer, has achieved it with a Holocaust film whose uncompromising depiction of life
in Auschwitz-Birkenau leaves no room for the kind
of emotional uplift and consolation offered by other
award-winning films about the Shoah such as
Schindlers List or Life is Beautiful.
The true story of the Final Solution is the mass
slaughter of European Jews.
Yet, Nemes argues, when we meet in London,

Nemes: There is no way to forgive the Holocaust

the experience of the camps (which Primo Levi said

were fully understood only by the dead) is often instead portrayed as a paradigm that is about survival, and almost like a Christian, sort of
post-Jewish, understanding of redemption.
It may be, as he suggests, that the emphasis on
anomalous survivor stories was a reaction to the
way people, after the war was over, kept asking
why the Jews went to the gas chambers and didnt
do more to save themselves.
That puts blame on the victims, instead of putting blame on the perpetrators, says Nemes.
And this has been very much pushed by the Germans, I think. I really have this feeling.
This shifting of guilt has occasionally come up in
response to the films laconic protagonist, Saul Auslander (played by Geza Rohrig).
As a member of the Sonderkommando, hes
part of a group of Jewish prisoners responsible for
maintaining order among Jews as theyre shepherded from the train to the gas chamber. Auslander and his colleagues removed corpses, cut and
collected hair, extracted gold teeth, plundered
personal belongings and operated the crematoria.
For this they received a few months extra life, before being murdered themselves.
At a recent press conference in Cannes, one reporter asked whether this made them half-victims,
half-hangmen.
The question angered Rohrig at the time and
even today Nemes is in no doubt: the Sonderkommando are blameless.
While it's maybe easier to cope by saying there
were bad Jews here and good Jews there, the
moral question doesn't lie with the Sonderkommandos: they are victims like the others.
They experienced death stretched out over a
period of time, which is in a way so cruel.
The system of the camps was designed as pure
evil, and Nemes can't see any logical explanation
for what was done to the Jews.

Consequently, there's no way to forgive or forget, he says, bitterly. For me, it's out of the question. I am not ashamed to be angry.
Some Jews maybe think its not polite to be angry
any more, and thats why they say it wasnt clear-cut.
Yes, its clear-cut. From a moral point of view, its extremely clear-cut.
Born in Budapest, Nemes, 39, learned about the
Holocaust from an early age.
By the time he was five, he knew that his maternal
great-grandparents had died in the gas chambers,
and that his fathers family were forced into hiding.
His mother, with whom he moved to Paris when
he was 12, didnt try to spare me, says Nemes.
And I don't think sparing works. The sense of destruction is almost in my genes. Its almost a genetic transmission. So we live with it. My story
cannot be separated from these people.
Now back living in Budapest, he wanted with
Son of Saul to give the audience a visceral understanding of the camp experience, something he
believes has been lacking.
Jews, I think, were desperate to communicate
what they endured, he claims. Cinema can do it,
but never really did it. And I wanted to talk about the
dead; I didnt want to talk about anything else.
The film is shot from Auslanders subjective point
of view as he pursues a personal mission to find a
rabbi to give a dead boy, whom he claims is his son,
a Jewish burial.
The horrific details of the camp literally a death
factory come in and out of focus, as Nemes tries to
communicate something of the limitations and
frenzy and despair that made up life in Auschwitz.
He hopes that by creating such an intimate connection the film might have a role in helping to combat the worrying rise were seeing in anti-Semitism,
because when you put yourself in the position of
someone in the camp, and live this life, maybe it
gives you another perspective a very personal one,
a very immediate one as a reference point.

Inside hell: Geza Rohrig as Saul Auslander

The European Jewish Congress says more than

600,000 Hungarian Jews were murdered by the
Nazis (aided actively by the Hungarian government), with many, like the filmmakers relatives,
being put to death in Auschwitz.
Despite this catastrophe, there is currently a thriving Jewish community in Budapest.
We cannot deny it: there are Jewish events, people going to synagogue, theres a tradition, says
Nemes. But at the same time, you can feel that Hungary hasnt come to terms with its past and theres
still anti-Semitism.
This doesnt make his homeland unique, of course.
I think its dangerous to be Jewish everywhere in Europe now, he suggests.
Which begs the question: does the Oscar winner
see a future for himself there? Nemes smiles.
I hope so. Although I have my passports in my
pocket at all times.
Son of Saul (12A) is in cinemas and on demand from
Friday. JW3 will also host a number of UK Jewish Film
Festival screenings from Sunday, May 15. Details:

YOURE WELCOME...

Lucy Daltroff unearths hidden gems for Olympic visitors to Brazil

ur waiter might be called John Lennon a

tribute by his Beatles-loving parents who
were avid fans but thats literally where
the comparisons to home end.
A pair of blue parrots having a bit of a love-in
on their perches outside the kitchen window confirm I am indeed 6,000 miles from Britain, on a nature reserve in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil.
Im here to research places to stay for visitors
coming here for rest and relaxation before or after
the Olympic Games.
Reserva do Ibitipoca certainly fits the bill. It is
set in 8,000 acres just a 4hr drive from Rio, yet the
small hotel gives a feeling of staying with friends
in a luxury country farmhouse.
It dates from 1715 and has a wraparound veranda strewn with hammocks and self-contained
houses in the vast grounds,
for those who prefer to do
their own thing.
The food is stunning. I
counted nine home-made
cakes for breakfast before
any other dishes appeared, and that was for
just 12 people.
It is possible to see the
beautiful surroundings in
several ways: on horseback,
guided hikes or electric mountain bikes. I took the horse option,
exploring hills, valleys and lush vegetation until eventually reaching a waterfall
where, quite miraculously, a magnificent lunch appeared, with tablecloth and crystal glasses.
Every morning there are yoga classes and the
views make the exercise incredibly enjoyable. I
also took an early-morning walk with the resident
ornithologist, a great way to appreciate the varied
brightly-coloured birds busy organising their own
lives in the trees and valleys.
The main purpose of Reserva do Ibitipoca is to
encourage sustainable tourism, although the proprietors are concerned with social and economic
issues as well as environmental ones.
Many projects are geared towards the commu-

nity, protecting local culture and history and stimulating a more diverse economy.
If the coastline is preferred, Pousada Picinguaba is a boutique hotel near the colonial town
of Paraty. It stands above a traditional caiara fishing village overlooking a forested coastline and
the only way to reach it is by foot.
The white-and-blue painted house is set in a
tropical garden and is beautiful, despite the presence of some mosquitoes. The food is delicious
and local, including freshly-caught fish, and the
pousada has its own schooner to take visitors to
smaller islands where there are white beaches and
classic seascapes.
Fazenda da Catuaba is set in 1,100 acres
among hills next to the Serra Do Mar
state park, an area that was once at
the heart of Brazils coffee trade
and just over 200 miles from Rio.
The main hotel is an 1815
colonial house and the 10
bedrooms are separate buildings in the grounds.
The food is almost exclusively from the propertys
own organic farms; whitewater rafting and horse riding
are on offer and the community is packed with artworks and
even has an artist-in-residence.
Property owner Emmanuel Rengade is engaged in a huge project to
counter deforestation, with a team busily
planting trees to replace those which have been
lost and have led to climate change and water
problems in parts of the country.
The last stop on my journey is Rio and the famous Copacabana Palace Hotel with its huge
swimming pool and luxurious rooms that have
been hosting celebrities since the 1920s.
I was soon on the legendary beach enjoying
the sun and glancing up the hill towards Sugarloaf
and Corcovado Mountain, home to the outstretched figure of Christ the Redeemer.
I discovered afterwards that its sculptor, Paul
Landowski, and engineer, Heitor Levy, were both
Jewish. Even more extraordinary, the famous

beach I am on is in the centre of an eruv.

Perhaps I should not be surprised; after
all, this entire city is full of diversity and
excitement.
As I drink a Caipirinha, the delicious
local cocktail, I contemplate the things
that make Rio famous: Football, extravagant fashions and of course Carnival,
all in startling contrast to the 1,000
slums, or favelas.
Now there is the added frisson of the
imminent Olympic Games, the first to
be held in a South American country.
Mayor Eduardo Paes is passionate
that the city has a lasting legacy to improve the lives of the inhabitants and his
main aim has been to renovate the port
area, once the entry point for African
slaves, but more recently a graffitismeared wasteland.
Now called Porto Maravilha, or Marvellous Port, it consists of hotels, office
complexes, residences, leisure space
and a light-rail transit line. The highlight
is the Museum of Tomorrow, a new forward-thinking science and technical
hotspot designed in the shape of a fish. From top: Iconic panorama; Lucys amorous parrots; stunning

NEW A-GENDER
Torah
for
THEORY OF
TodayGENERAL RELATIVITY
Matzah has much to teach us about the
true significance of the festival
BY SARA

BY RABBI DANIEL

ROWE

THIS 11 MAY marks 100 years

since Albert Einsteins theory
of general relativity was published in Annalen der Physik.
His dual theories of Relativity
(Special and General) shattered Newtonian physics by
showing space and time
were not absolute, but would
appear different to different
observers depending on
their mass or acceleration.
Einsteins insight provided
a giant leap forward in the
human quest to understand
our world. But for the Jew
there were at least two more
aspects to celebrate.
The first: How, asks Maimonides, do we come to
love or have awe for God?
When one contemplates His
awesome and great creations
and acts...
Nature is the language of
God. Science is the tool we
use to decode nature. Einsteins discoveries reveal aspects of spacetime that are

astonishing in their beauty. To

the mind that sees the universe as the face of God,
Einsteins discoveries form an
unveiling of that face, allowing us to stare more directly
at the beauty of creation, and
feel a profound desire to
spring closer to its Creator.
But Einsteins discovery
packed an even more powerful punch, showing us the
physical universe seems to
mirror deep spiritual principles.
Centuries before Einstein,
the Gaon of Vilna (17201797) wrote that time and
space themselves were not
absolute, but creations. Time
allows us to be separated
from past and future. Space
allows us to be separated
from others. Together individuals are distinct, disconnected and detached.
But that is not the only possible perspective. In the
teachings of Ramchal (17071746), the physical word is ultimately a condensing of a
primal light.
That light still exists deep
within each one of us, as a
Godly soul. And from the per-

Sedra:

Pesach 2
BY RABBI ARIEL

ABEL

THE READINGS for the latter two days of

Pesach range from the celebratory to the
apocalyptic. The seventh day reading commemorates the anniversary of the crossing of
the Red Sea, on the 21st Nisan, 3,328 years
ago. In Sephardi congregations, special
liturgical pieces are
chanted by the congregation mentioning the Biblical songwriters
who praised God: Moses,
Joshua, Debora, Hannah,
David, Solomon and, finally, the
great song of redemption when there
will be world peace.
The Torah portion reads the Song of
Moses, which is written in the pattern of
brickwork to indicate how the waters piled up
into walls through which each tribe passed on
dry land. The miraculous nature of the crossing included a holding-off of the Pharaoh and
his troops. A force field disabled all their efforts to mount a night-time attack. The song
hails God as a Man of War, and the peoples in
the region cower before him, trembling at the
news of the drowning of the supreme army of

spective of that light there is

no experience of space, nor
of time; we are at one with
one another, and can experience past, present and future.
The 18th-century rabbis
were not cosmologists; the
light they referenced was
not electromagnetic radiation. They did not know relativistic physics.
But Einsteins laws revealed
that in physics the precise
parallel is true: separateness
of space and time are things
that are only experienced
from our perspective. From
the perspective of light there
is, in fact, no past present nor
future, and no distance between any objects.
The description of the laws
of the universe maps the prescription of the laws of spirituality, resulting in an
alignment of two faces of
God, Torah and science, another reason to celebrate.
The more we attach ourselves to the souls light, the
more we find ourselves living
past present and future together. And the more we are
at one with all mankind.

Egypt by a slave nation that has broken free

of the grip of its masters. The haftarah is the
song of David, which ends with a verse we all
know from reciting the grace after meals:
Magdil. Davids motivation to praise God was
the deliverance he experienced individually,
saved from the clutches of his angry father-inlaw, King Saul, who wanted him dead.
The eighth day of Pesach doesnt exist in Israel: it is marked as the North African festival
of Mimouna, when rabbis bless crowds who
gather to picnic and eat the first bake of pitta
breads. Other congregations mark seudat
Mashiach, a custom strongly promoted by
Chabad Chasidism, closing the festival with
song and a final indulgence of matza and four
cups of wine as practised at the Pesach seder.
This event focuses on the messianic redemption read about in the portion of Isaiah
read for haftarah on the eighth day. The haftarah describes the stature of the messiah, descendant of David who will be able to sniff
God-fearers out and bring justice
to the people without being swayed
by any other considerations. Religious
Zionism
prepares for Israels Day of Independence,
when the same haftara is read at the
end of morning service to identify the
settlement and thereafter the establishment
of the State of Israel as atchalta di-Geula the
start of the final redemption, as believed by
Rav Kook and millions of Jews in Israel and
worldwide. May I take this opportunity to wish
all JN readers a very pleasant springtime and
a safe return to the consuming of chametz.

SHAPIRO

AS AN early-years teacher, I love the build-up to

Pesach, teaching my students about the many
exciting and interesting aspects that surround
this wonderful festival.
We cover various Pesach topics, but there are
two ideas that stand out for me: the dietary laws
requiring us not to eat chametz (loosely translated as leaven) and the transformation of the
Jewish people into a Nation as they are taken
out of Egypt by God.
Why do I think that these two aspects of Pesach should be highlighted? To my mind, we can
learn an awful lot from them.
Its all too easy, at this time of year to get
bogged down in the countless details that come
with making Pesach. We need to take the time
to reflect on the underlying meanings of Pesach
so that we learn lessons from them.
Judaism is not a religion of mere ritual; there
is purpose behind our actions.
The shunning of bread in favour of the simple,
flat matzah is a prime example.
Both these items are both made of flour and
water, but whereas we let the bread rise, the
matzah process has to be completed in 18 minutes
from start to finish.
We need to internalise the message that we

should act more like matzah (flat and humble) and

less like bread (puffed up and arrogant).
Our society focuses a great deal of time and
attention on the actions of others. The matzah
way of looking at other people would encourage
us to consider with humility whether we too are
guilty of all those negative traits or actions that
we observe in others.
As well as individually, different sections of our
Orthodox community need to learn from this
and recognise the message that just because
people hold a different belief it doesnt mean we
must criticise them.
We are tolerant when it comes to people of
other faiths and none, but we often fail to extend
the same courtesy to our own brothers and sisters.
This brings me to my second point about the
Jewish people becoming a nation. When we left
Egypt, we consisted of 12 tribes, each with its
own unique strengths and weaknesses.
However, we needed all 12 tribes in order to
succeed as a nation. It shouldnt matter what our
personal beliefs may be; despite the great diversity of the authentic Jewish tradition, we are all
brothers and sisters and this should be of paramount importance.
To live up to this ideal, we need to rid ourselves of our chametz and look inward before
commenting on others.

As we approach Yom Haatzmaut and

Israels 68th birthday, where will the
Jewish State be 68 years from now?
BY RABBI NEIL

JANES

MORE THAN 20 years ago,

the Shaliach (Israeli Educational
Emissary) for RSY-Netzer engaged
me in learning about Israel while I
was a young madrich (youth
leader). Just last week, I sat down
with him again for coffee.
In 2016, I am lucky that he is still
one of the people I count as one of
my educational mentors, guides
and friends. And the session from
20 years ago is still memorable.
When I asked him his response to
the question, Where will Israel be
68 years from now, he quoted Talmud back to me: After the Temple was destroyed, Prophecy was
taken from the prophets and given
to fools and children. (Babylonian
Talmud, Bava Batra 12b).
In other words, only fools and
children think they can predict the
future.
When the sage Honi saw a man
planting a tree, he was told that
the tree was being planted for future generations.
Awaking from a 70-year sleep,
Honi meets the grandson of the
man standing by the same tree.
However, already Honi is not
recognised by his community, nor
his colleagues.
This Talmudic legend reminds us
of two things first of all, the obvious, that we plant seeds for our
children and our grandchildren.
Second, we must expect to be

strangers to the world in 70 years.

So we are caught between, on
the one hand, the legacy we leave
for future generations and, on the
other hand, our estrangement from
the future.
I have been blessed to have a relationship with my teacher and
mentor for more than 20 years.
We each have spent our adult
lives in the Jewish world trying to
sow seeds and protecting the tender saplings with all our strength.
What is the legacy my generation could leave for Israel and the
Jewish people in the next 68
years? An understanding that Israel and our relationship to Israel
can be startling in its particularism.
It is possible to care deeply
about our future the future of the
Jewish people and our struggle
to ensure the state that fulfils our
national aspirations for self-determination continues to reflect the
highest of Jewish ideals.
At the same time, this can be
done without jingoistic nationalism, oppression of the other or denial of the Palestinian peoples
desire for their own state.
But we cannot sacrifice either of
these (particularism or universalism) for the other.
We have to be able to think
about our shared fate as Jews and
we have to be able to see ourselves as part of family of humankind. I will be a stranger to the
world in 68 years, but I pray it will
be one of hope and peace.

I WAS brought up to be a

that wasnt going to get me

The easy option would have
been to be obedient, saving
their own skins. But no. They
saved the baby boys instead.

So they came up with a replacement, called
confirmation. Today, we call it Kabbalat Torah,
and it is now a complement to, rather than a
substitute for, bar/batmitzvah. It is unique to Liberal Judaism and ione of our greatest strengths
and gifts as a movement.
KT, as it is universally and affectionately
called, is a group experience. The whole class
(usually in school year nine or 10) learns together, often including trips, practical projects
and an emphasis on doing Jewish life
rather than just observing it.
At my community, Northwood and Pinner
Liberal Synagogue, our KT weekend was last
month. On Saturday morning, the shul was full,
as regulars and not-so-regulars joined to
support the dozen-or-so teenagers bravely
leading the whole service
Guided and supported by rabbis and student rabbis, they put on their glad rags, stood
up in front of a couple of hundred adults and
led us in prayer.
As far as I could tell, the class had varying
levels of Jewish interest and engagement. I am
sure some will deepen their involvement in the
community while others will drift off into other
pursuits. But it is such a special thing to lead
your community and do it surrounded by
friends more so in your mid-teens.
There is a narrative within the community
that Jewish life and meaning are very hard to
sustain in young peoples teenage years.
KT proves that, with the right combination of
empowerment, opportunity and us adults letting
go just a bit, we can counter this narrative and
create powerful Jewish experiences for our teens.

This week, Reform Judaism

board member Sherry
Ashworth selects Biblical
midwives Shifrah and Puah
Luther King.
And then Shifrah and Puah
are caught. Theyre hauled up
in front of Pharoah. How terrifying must that have been?
They have to answer for
their acts of disobedience. So
what do they do? Remember,
they are midwives resourceful, plucky, quick-thinking,
bringers of life, not dealers in
death. To survive they bend
the truth. Not our fault, they
explain unlike the Egyptian
women, Hebrew women can
deliver their own babies, and
by the time we get there, its
too late! Honest, guv!
Pharoah falls for this. Or

rather, God looks kindly on

them hes pleased by their
words. I like to think God understands the compassionate
lie one that is told to benefit
others. And even, sometimes,
to save yourself.
So for me, Shifrah and Puah
are heroes because they are
so firmly on the side of life,
and risk all to do the right
thing. They are truly brave and
principled and just a little
subversive.

Judaism board member and a

Practicalities of setting
up my own website
Dear Anton
I need a website but am worried about the cost. A friend
tells me I could easily set it up myself cheaply or even for
nothing. Is this practical?
Steven
Dear Steven
We understand the temptation to cut costs, but you should hear
what some of our customers say about undoing the damage of a
hasty DIY launch. A good web designer will talk you through your
options, starting by establishing your budget so you concentrate
only on those services that you can immediately afford.
Then there are basic decisions about the size and type of website you need. Do you want it licensed for e-commerce, or just as
an electronic brochure? Have you checked the websites your
competitors use? Might you need to add functionality later?
All these questions will influence the advice you can expect
a good web provider will guide you smoothly into the profitable
world of internet brand building and increased market share.

Do I have to network
in order to find work?
Dear Claire
Im looking for work. Do I really need to network? Friends
say I do, but I hate asking others for favours.
Miriam
Dear Miriam,
Your friends are right. Networking is vital. Most importantly, it
helps you to access the hidden job market many jobs arent
advertised, so you need to seek them out. Second, its a great
way to find out about a new industry or company. Third, it enables you to practise talking positively about your skills and
achievements, important for the interviews ahead.
Many Resource clients initially dislike the idea of networking
but there are many ways to make it easier. Its not asking for a
favour; think of it as a two-way street. Start by contacting people who can recommend you to others. Meet them to catch up,
learn from what they have to say, ask who else they suggest you
contact. This approach maximises your opportunities to find
work and the network you create will be hugely helpful in future.

since then, the Group has developed an excellent reputation for
providing care of the highest standard.

We spoke with people who use the service and relatives.

They told us they were happy with the care provided.
For example, a relative told us that the care provided was
really, really good and said, the carers really engage with people,
they are excellent. We saw staff interacting with people in a

Rep team get revenge

to claim Pesach Cup
Andrew

SHERWOOD

OLYMPIC-BOUND Israeli judo

star Or Sasson kept up his encouraging preparations for Rio by winning silver at the European Judo
Championships in Russia at the
weekend.
The 25-year-old (pictured
above) was beaten to gold in the
100kg event by the Olympic and
world champion, Teddy Riner. He
said: This is a very important
achievement for me and a step
forward ahead of Rio.
Timna Nelson Levy claimed Israels other medal, winning bronze
in the womens U57kg event.
Yarden Gerbi, whos also heading
to Brazil, failed to get on the
podium. She said: Im disappointed with the result, but end
the championships optimistic
about the future, my main goal
this year is to succeed in Rio.

Double delight for

Raiders on Sunday?
SUNDAY MORNING presents Raiders with the chance to secure
a league and cup double when they travel to Harmen, looking for
the win which will see them retain their Premier Division title. Jointmanager Jonathan Green is playing it cool, predicting a tough
match against a side they beat 7-2 back in September. Using the
Chelsea vs Spurs match which is happening the following day as
an analogy, he is confident that Harmen wont want them to win
the league on their home pitch. Triumphant on Sunday, they will
then have a week to prepare for what would then be their biggest
ever game Hendon in the Peter Morrison final where victory
would see them claim the clubs first treble.
IT HASNT been the best of seasons for Everton, but things could
be on the up for them if they sign the Israeli Christiano Ronaldo.
Given the name due to his goalscoring feats of late, Eran Zahavi
has scored 111 goals for Maccabi Tel Aviv over the past three seasons and was the top scorer in this seasons Champions League
at least up until the qualifying stages were over. Spurs have also
been linked with the 28-year-old. Maybe theyll pick him up, to serve
as a pick-me-up at having to play second fiddle to Leicester.
WHILE HE may have been overlooked by his peers in the Football
League Awards for the Championship and the PFAs team of the
season, Israeli midfielder Berem Kayal was named Player of the
Year by Brighton supporters. The Israeli midfielder received the
accolade at the players awards dinner, with his compatriot and
the sides top scorer this season, Tomer Hemed, finishing in fourth.
THE GOOD news is the first runner to get to the finishing line at
Sundays London Marathon was an Israeli runner. The bad news is
Hagai Penkar turned up there for the start of it.

THE VOICE OF JEWISH SPORT

THE MACCABI London Rep

Team claimed revenge for last
years penalty shoot-out defeat
as they beat the Israeli Olim
team 4-1 in the annual Pesach
Cup on Monday night.
Played under the floodlights
at the Wingate stadium in Netanya, the England team, who
were under the new management duo of David Garbacz and
Edward Misrahi, featured a mixture of youth and experience,
which included Maccabiah internationals Dan Jacobs in goal
and Greg Corin and Danny
Daggers in the centre of the
park.
Yoav Lebens, Elliot Muslawy,
Rocky Spitzer and Tom Prais
scored for the away team, Marcio Mansour had levelled the
score for the Olim side.
Joint-manager Garbacz said:
This was a wonderful match
played in a fabulous spirit on a
beautiful pitch. It was an honour
to co-manage this select team,
together with Edward and we
were both very proud of how
our team played despite hardly
knowing each other.
Everyone played superbly
and it felt great to lift the cup in

Both squads (top) and the victorious London Lions rep team (above)

Israel in such a beautiful setting.

Wed like to thank David Kyte
who is the inspiration behind
this great annual event and the
Olim manager Yoni Sidi. It was
an honour to be involved and
well done to everyone who took
part in both sides.
Working with Edward and
his insight into the Real Madrid
way of coaching and playing
was an eye opener for me and
we look forward to defending
our trophy next season.
We hope that the board of
directors will entrust us again to
manage and coach the squad
next Pesach, possibly in
Jerusalem!
Olim manager Sidi said: I

was impressed with the visiting

team, its my wish that every one
of their players moves to Israel
to strengthen our team!
England squad: Dan Jacobs
(London Lions), Zac Garbacz
(Hendon), Joel Barnett (Los
Blancos), Ben Weinberger (London Lions), Yoav Lebens (FC
Team), Thomas Prais (London

ISRAELI BASKETBALL champions
Hapoel Jerusalem completed the
signing of Dominican Edgar Sosa
though were left waiting for the
transfer to be completed by the
Iranian Basketball Association.
The 28-year-old was signed
from Iranian side Petrochimi Bandar Imam, and was delighted to
receive his international release
form. Arriving in Israel, he said: I
hoped Israel-Iran relations dont
get in the way. It was a culture
shock playing in Iran. There is no
nightlife, alcohol is illegal, so for
me it was six months of sleep, eat
and play basketball. Im thankful
for the opportunity I have been
given to play for Jerusalem.

Linda gets back on Ilana wrestles her Adams marathon

the court for charity way into history effort in Brighton
FIFTY YEARS
after last setting foot on the
netball court,
Linda Yentob
not only rekindled her love of
the game but
did so by arranging a charity match.
Raising
nearly 2,000 at
the
match
played
at
Copthall School for Resource, a
charity she decided to raise
money for after they helped her
friend find work, Linda (pictured
fourth from right), said: Its
been really worthwhile. Weve
all had a fantastic time getting

back to playing the game we

enjoyed all those years ago
while raising money to support
the wonderful work Resource
does.
She now has plans to organise a second match next month.

ILANA KRATYSH will be

the first-ever Israeli woman
to compete in the
wrestling events at the
Olympic Games, after she
secured her place in Rio.
The 25-year-old became
the 30th Israeli to book
her spot in
Brazil after
winning
the World
Qualification Tournament in Mongolia.
A four-time European Championships silver medalist in the U69 kg
event, she beat Venezuelan Maria Acosta to book
her place at The Games.

Elsewhere, Misha Zilberman is set to secure his

qualification for the badminton competition, when
the Olympic qualification
rankings are released next
week. Up to number 25 in
the Olympic rankings
following his bronze
win at last weeks
Peru International,
his
nearest challengers for the
position
all
dropped
points
over the weekend,
with him taking
to his Facebook
page to say: I
have set the criteria for Rio.

ADAM NATHAN Schultz raised

300 for World Jewish Relief after
completing
the
Brighton
marathon.
The 29-year-old from London,
was recently diagnosed with HIV,
which led him to rethink his lifes priorities. Finishing in a
time of 3:54:34, he
said: It was always a
dream of mine to run
marathons. But every
year I came up with
excuses to convince
myself that I wasnt
ready. Last year I was
diagnosed with HIV
and I was suddenly
faced with my own
mortality.
I decided not to

waste another minute analysing

whether I was up for the challenge.
How could I truly know unless I
tried? I ran my first marathon last
October and the Brighton
marathon is one of four marathons
and
six
halfmarathons Ive signed
up for so far.
Samantha Martin,
WJRs Community
Engagement Coordinator, said: Adams
determination
is
humbling. We are so
grateful for his support which will improve the lives of
many
vulnerable
Jews living in the Former Soviet Union
right now.

ATHLETES FROM around
the Jewish community
raised nearly 30,000 for
charity at Sundays London
Marathon, but the figure
was significantly lower
than in previous years due
to the run being staged

The clash with the second
day of Pesach meant a considerable number of Jewish runners didnt take part, leaving
organisations counting the
cost for an event, which in the

past has raised up to 250,000

for much-needed causes.
Jewish Care saw five of
their supporters raise more
than 11,000. Four of the

four hours, with Josh Wynne,
who has so far raised more
