Identify competency number, letter and

subcategory.

Major Competency Area: L, Pediatrics

Competency: L-1, Knowledge, Assessment
and Care of Pediatric Client/Family
Subcategory: L-1-2, Demonstrate
knowledge of human anatomy and
physiology of pediatric clients: central
nervous system

Describe One Significant Learning

Experience In This Course Related To
The CLPNA Competency. Provide An
Example.

One significant learning experience for me

happened in the Nursing Foundations 2005
theory class while going over topic 1
Growth and Development, and topic 4.1
Nutrition. Before these topics I did not
know that good fats should not be restricted
for children under 2 years of age because
they are essential for myelination. I learned
that as an example children should be given
homogenized milk until 2 years of age.

Describe what you learned and how it

relates to the competency. Explain why it
is meaningful.

I learned that toddlers need fats in their diet

to ensure proper brain growth and
development. Myelination is occurring at
the most rapid rate in these first few years
and good fats are needed to help produce
the myelin sheath that covers the axon and
transmits nerve impulses.

Uses the proficiency categories to rate

their proficiency in the chosen CLPNA
competency. Explain what was done to
achieve this competency.

I would rate my proficiency in the

competency of the pediatric central nervous
system as fair. I understand the competency
in theory, and in class scenarios, but have
not yet had the chance to apply it to my
student nursing practice.

Describe how you will apply this

learning in your current and future
nursing practice.

In my current student nursing practice I

will be able to use this knowledge to
develop an appropriate nursing intervention
for the pediatric client and his/her parents

in regards to nutrition to encourage proper
development of the central nervous system.
In my future nursing practice I will be able
to develop and apply appropriate nursing
interventions so the client in my care may
have the best possible outcome that they
are able to attain.
