BSN II
STUDENT’S JOURNAL FOR RLE
Name: Yael S. Ezra Group No.15 Inclusive Dates:
Clinical Area: OB Ward
==================================================================
Part I: Pre-Exposure
1) What is your goal for this rotation?
My goal for this rotation is to be able to apply my knowledge and skills in doing the
procedure (pap smear and HIV testing) to real-life problems and take care of real
patients while continuing to learn new things and improve one's abilities in a professional
healthcare setting. Also, To maintain a healthy, professional, and ethical cooperative and
collaboration environment with other student nurses, employees, administrators, and
clinical instructors.
2. What are your expectations for this rotation?
My expectations for this rotation is that I would be able to do patient care to resolve
problems and design therpaeutic nursing interventions and evaluate their effectiveness.
To develop my communication skills in working with patients, Also, Clinical rotations
are designed for learning and I’m accepting the fact that I will be making some mistakes.
There’s no shame in making the inevitable mistakes. In fact, it’s better to do so in this
structured environment where I can receive guidance from the clinical instructor and
analyze the procedure (pap smear and HIV testing) or any situation with them so I can
handle it differently next time.

3. What are your fears and anxieties for this rotation?

My fear in every rotation is ineffective communication, which will clearly affect the
nurse-patient relationship. This may lead to misunderstandings. Misunderstandings out of
a lack of communication can lead to some serious issues in the healthcare setting.
However it is our responsibility as student nurses to try to make sure that the patient
understands the procedure that will be done clearly. With an effective nurse -patient
communication, this will lead to favourable health outcomes such as increased patients
satisfaction and comfortability with the procedure, compliance and overall health status.

4.) How did you prepare for this rotation?

For enhanced recall, I often write down notes that include the significant or keyword terms in
the material. I also did some research and watched some supplemental videos of what possible
scenarios happen during clinical rotations especially with this kind of procedure.

Part II: Actual Exposure to the Area

1) Describe your learning experiences in the clinical area.
Since we are facing a very challenging situation right now and the mode of learning is
different, we are unable to experience what it’s like to learn in an actual clinical rotation
and of course to experience it. It is hard to cope up with this kind of learning since we
are not exposed to real-life situations and problems that we, student nurses, should have
for the enhancement of our skills and knowledge. And also, There’s an empty feeling for
us student nurses, since we haven’t felt any fulfillment of what it’s like to help and
deliver care for the people.

Part III: Post Exposure

1) Did you meet your set goal? Describe.
Again, since we are in a different mode of learning and we are not exposed to real-life situations
and not able to experience any clinical rotation, I can’t say if I have met any of my goals but, if I
imagine the preparation that I have done, before the actual clinical rotation, I think that I would
be able to meet my goals. With the endless practice of my skills to perfect the procedure through
watching supplemental videos and researching, I think I can execute it well and I would be able
to satisfy my patient and give her the comfortability that she wants and deserves.
2) What are the fears, anxieties and challenges encountered? Describe.
I can’t say if I have encountered any fears, anxieties, and challenges since I didn’t have the
chance to experience being in a clinical rotation. But if I do have the chance, maybe I would be
challenged and have extreme fear and anxiety when it comes to communicating with my patient.
I’m aware that I’m not that good when it comes to communicating with other people, but I'm
willing to take little steps to overcome and withstand my fears and anxiety. These would also be
easy to overcome if I have the chance to be exposed to a healthcare setting where I would be
exchanging conversations with different kinds of patients. In that way, I can enhance my
communication skills and be able to avoid misunderstandings with my patient.

Part IV: Reflection

What is the significance and implications of your clinical experience for this rotation as a nursing
student?
As for me, Imagining if I did experience it, As student nurses, it helped us to work effectively.
Challenges emerge unexpectedly, and to overcome them, We use what we have learned to shape
ourselves as nurses. This Clinical experience helped us nursing students to become accustomed
to high-stress moments. This experience enabled us to hone our preparation skills and reflexes to
be ready for anything. This Clinical learning is essential to train us, student nurses, how to
handle both the routine and high-stress elements of the job without negatively impacting patient
outcomes.

1) Reflect on which particular incident or in general about this experience that you feel has a
big impact in your learning journey. Describe these experiences in terms of any effect on
your own personal judgment, possible change in perception/knowledge/ideas, etc and
impact on your values and beliefs.
