Douglas Haig
Douglas Haig was
born in Edinburgh on
19 June 1861 and was
the senior British
Army commander
during World War 1.
He was in charge of
the British
Expeditionary Force
from 1915 all the way
until the end of the
war. He was famous
for being commander
during the Battle of
the Somme, the Third
Battle of Ypres and
the Hundred Days Offensive, which ultimately
led to the Germans surrender in 1918. He
was a popular commander and his funeral
was a day of national mourning.
Later on Haig was criticised for giving orders
that led to the deaths of many British
soldiers, being given the nickname Butcher
of the Somme. However many veterans and
historians still praise him for his leadership.
