Why ENRICHMENT ?
GHGs Effect,
Ozone Depletion,
Reduction in local air quality,
Failure of engines when used as energy sources,
Corrosion of bottles,(H2S)
Freezing problems at exit points(CO2 )
To avoid or minimise Emissions from vehicles

To use as vehicle fuel, CNG like bottling required

IITD Biogas Enrichment Facility

Main Components of Raw Biogas:

Methane
Carbon Dioxide
Nitrogen
Besides main components
Hydrogen Sulfide
Halogenated compounds
CO2

Enrichment Methods
Absorption into liquid (Physical / Chemical)
Adsorption on solid surface
Membrane separation
Cryogenic separation
Chemical conversion

IITD enrichment unit uses water scrubbing

process (physical adsorption into liquid)

Removal Of
CO2, H2S

Advantages of Water Scrubbing

Pressurised Water a good solvent for CO 2 and H2S
Upto 98 % purity can be achieved
Low

initial cost
operating cost
Process Handling Easy
Methane loss 1-2 %
PACKED BED SCRUBBER IS DESIGNED FOR THIS

DESIGNING THE PACKED BED SCRUBBER : Assumptions of basic data

Solubility data generation
Material balance and determination of water flow rate
Selection of packing material
Determination of column diameter
Determination of the height of the packed bed column
Selection of packing support and water distributor

OPERATING STEPS : Raw biogas is compressed upto 1.0 Mpa pressure to

enhance solubility of CO2 in water.

Pressurized biogas is sent into bottom section of the

scrubber.
Packing material is used to enhance the contact time

(interfacial area) between gas and water.

Pressurized water is sprayed from top to absorb the CO2

from pressurized biogas
