By applying newly developed durable paint coating with high albedo and low brightness to the

conventional asphalt pavement, the effectiveness of reducing pavement temperature and sensible
heat flux is investigated by field measurements
Another field measurement has been conducted in Tsukuba City located about 50 km north-east
of Tokyo.
It is found that the paint-coated asphalt pavement shows about 15C lower surface temperature
than that of the conventional one at the maximum (Figure 6)
Cool pavement technologies studied to address hot urban surfaces
How can cool pavements help mitigate heat island effect?
The presence of a highly reflextive layer was also found to be very effective in reducing high
temperatures in pavement.
The added cost and complexity of placement meant the systems were not practical.
The lows become less low, and the highs become less high.
The simulation shows the presence of insulation to be effective in lowering the temperature at
the lower layers to different extents.
Some issues with the durability of ultrathin portland cement concrete layers have also been
noted in the litterature.
Asphalt pavements often experience premature distresses caused by extreme environmental
condition of both high and low temperatures.
The OGFC experienced both higher highs and lower lows than the GRCS counterpart. The field
tests also showed similars results to the laboratory tests... Figure 16 shows that the GRCS at a
depth of 12.5mm
The temperature simulation indicated that the surface temperature of asphalt concrete could be
reduced up to 5.3 C in May and increased up to 1.1 C in February, respectively compared to
conventional asphalt concrete.
