Pollution

By: Adan Cervantes

Before we start...
Do you know, over 1 million seabirds and 100,000 sea mammals are killed by pollution
every year?

What is Pollution?
Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment that cause
adverse change. Pollution can take the form of chemical substances or energy, such as
noise, heat or light.

History of pollution
Detroit, Michigan (1966) Nuclear Power Plant Meltdown
Love Canal, New York (1970) Birth Defects that were caused by a toxic
dump
Elizabeth, New York (1979) 30 injured by toxic smoke from an
explosion
Death/Injuries From Air Pollution
Donora, Pennsylvania (1948) 20 Dead, 6000 Injured
New York, New York (1953) 250 Dead
New York, New York (1963) 200-400 Dead

Pollution can affect pets/animals?

Studies show that pets living with smokers may face greater risks than their
owners, due to the considerable amount of time spent near the floor. A study found
that cats that were exposed to passive smoke in homes had reduced lung
functioning compared to cats living in smoke-free homes.

Pollution causes Diseases

In particular, the new data reveal a stronger link between both indoor and outdoor air
pollution exposure and cardiovascular diseases, such as strokes and ischaemic heart
disease, as well as between air pollution and cancer.

Pollution affect plants

Acid rain can kill trees, destroy the leaves of plants, can infiltrate soil by making it
unsuitable for purposes of nutrition and habitation
Chemical reactions involving air pollutants create a poisonous gas ozone (O3). Gas
Ozone can affect peoples health and can damage vegetation types and some animal
life too.

SLE (Survey)
17 out of 40 people dont
care about what is going on
in the world dealing with
pollution. The 23 people
cared about what is going on
when dealing with pollution.

How can this relate to

you?

Solution/Recommendation
Keep chemicals out of water supply
Recycle everything that you can
Walk or ride your bike whenever possible/ Use public transportation
Buy reusable items
Dispose of toxic waste properly
Get reusable bags instead of paper bags
