History of Elections in the


Philippines
Colonial times but limited
Formally as early as 1901, there was an election
in Baliuag, Bulacan under the Americans
First popular election 1907 under the Americans
Stopped in 1972 when Marcos declared martial
law but granted again in 1978 with Interim
Batasan Pambansa (characterized by violence,
harassment & intimidation)
Post EDSA 1 : election became regular every 3
years
2010 : Automated Election System
