Sixth Grade Social Studies

Syllabus
Course Description
The 6th grade social studies classes will involve a study of the Western
Hemisphere. The Western Hemisphere includes the continents of North and South
America. Students will explore the tools and mental constructs used by geographers. We
will examine the physical features of different regions throughout the continents,
historical events which shaped the regions, their different cultures and governments, and
societal aspects which affect the regions today.
Classroom Goals
1) Learn the 5 themes of geography, study various tools used by
geographers to study both physical and human geography.
2) Read maps and graphs that relate to physical and human geography of
the world.
3) Learn the history, cultures, political and economic systems of various
countries and regions in North and South America.
4) Learn about population distribution and reasons for it.
Class Expectations
1) Complete assigned book work, map activities, short presentations, and
reading responses.
2) Participate in class discussion and group work.
3) Complete homework assignments especially those pertaining to project
work.
4) Read and respond to informational/nonfiction articles.
