Part 1: Project Information

Project Name:
Escape From Food Crisis and Fight For Sustainable Future
Project Description:

This project is to promote the ethical food consumption behaviour in

order to sustain the earth for us as well as our future generations to
live on.
Human activities consume resources and produce waste, which has
been exceeding the earths capacity. The Ecological Footprint, a
leading measures of such human demand on nature, shows that we
need 1.5 and 3.1 earths to fulfill our annual demand globally and by
Hong Kong people respectively. This overshooting of biocapacity is
threatening the substanability of the planet.
Food alone accounted for 23% of such demand in Hong Kong.
Food miles refers to the distance of journey food travels from
producer to the consumers plate, as a measure for impact to the
environment in terms of carbon emission by transportation media
and extra fuel usage. The longer the distance food travels, the
bigger the impact. Hong Kong is lack of natural resources and has
to import over 95% of food. Food miles is especially an important
issue in Hong Kong and around the globe as a result of globalization.
This form of trading will involve more participants in the food supply
chain as well. A typical chain contains producers, processors,
distributors, retailers, consumers. Any mistake made by any of
these people will increase the burden to the environment. Food
waste is also a problem in Hong Kong where 1/3 waste produced is
food. Everyday, 3,200 tonnes of food are sent to landfill which will
be full by 2020 if this situation continues.
This project will bring people to the attention of all these threats and
take action today. We are promoting the ethnical food consumption
behavior, which include purchasing locally grown and organic food,
buying/ordering food for no more than what we need to reduce
waste, recycling of associated waste products. We also recommend
Fair-trade products, which means all actors involved in the Food
Supply Chain are fairly rewarded. As a result, we could lower the
adverse impact to the environment by reducing food miles,
unnecessary food waste so as the fuel usage, carbon emission and
burden on landfill.
VSA students, teachers and parents are our primary target
participants. We promote the project through creating a powtoon
video and put it on to the homeroom wiki in the VSA portal. In the
video, we would highlight the problems and suggestions in simple
wordings and an eye-catching way with funny illustration.

Hopefully, the message would be spreaded out to every corner in

Hong Kong as time goes by.

Today is the first day of our assessment.
We were sorted into groups and
discussed the way of presenting our
promotion. I think it is vital to the success
of our project. I discussed with my group
about the idea of creating a video and
sharing it with other students in VSA.
They thought it was a great idea. We
then checked the rubric to make sure we
know all the requirement before we
started planning. It was a great start!
Date: 20-4-2016 to 24-4-2016
At home, I reviewed all relevant topics to
make sure I understand thoroughly. I
started to do research to get relevant
information and data, which will provide
evidence to support our findings and
promotion.

Date: 25-4-2016
I had prepared a mindmap for the project
to visualize the relationship of all relevant
topics. It helped me to organise the
information before I started to work on
the project. I started to prepare my
Individual Development Booklet with
reference to guidelines in rubics,
mindmap and details from research.

I outline the flow of how the video should
go and prepare it using Powtoon. I tried
to use as much animation as possible to
make the video more interesting and eyecatching.

Development Booklet to make sure I had
covered everything without mistake.

Part 4: Reflection
About Myself:
The most important thing I have learned in this project is
that human has been overshooting the biocapacity of the
earth which is seriously threatening the sustainability of
the earth. Hong Kong with an Ecological Footprint of 3.1 is
worse than the worlds average of 1.5. As a citizen in the
Hong Kong and the planet, it is important for us to take
action today to let people be aware of the situation and
apply ethical consumption behaviour to save Hong Kong
as well as the planet for us and future generations. I think
I had put a lot of effort in this project and I had tried my
best to finish this. I wish that I could spend more time on
our powtoon video, and we could make it more interesting
and eye-catching. I think the best work I did in this project
was Part 1 of the booklet, because of the research I had
done.
About the project:
I would rate the project 4.5. The project was overall very
successful. I think our group had been cooperating very
well together. We had done our part responsibly. We had
incorporated all the suggested information according to
the rubric. Our content is comprehensive. We can connect
all the different topics together and present it in a proper
manner.

For me, the most enjoyable part of the project was doing
research and finding out a lot of interesting facts. The
least enjoyable part was the large amount of time it took
me to make the powtoon video because I was not so
familiar with the features. Due to some technical issue
and time constraint, we turned out compromised to
present two videos for our project.
