Strengths of the lesson

The feedback says I asked lots of questions and asked for opinions, then answered the questions. The goal was to
get the students involved and thinking about the lesson. I think using colourful Lego helps to keep the students
focused on the task. I had the students make predictions about how the experiment would turn out for similar
engagement reasons. The feedback also says that I was good at explaining things.

Revisions that could be considered

The lesson was too short. Even with the idea of modifying the original boat, which I hadnt thought about when I
submitted the lesson plan, the lesson was 8 or 9 minutes of the 15 minutes goal. Some of the feedback is unsure
of whether grade 2 students could handle writing down what they learned. Double-checking that everything is set
up properly before starting into the lesson would have prevented the gaffe I made early in the lesson when I didnt
have the handouts to hand out. Apart from that, having the students make boats would have extended the lesson
dramatically, but probably too long. Just going through the lesson at a slower pace may have helped, or waiting
for more responses at certain parts. A more in-depth discussion of what a catamaran is could also have helped
with the duration of the lesson.

Overall evaluation of the lesson and next steps

There were two main issues that I need to address for future lessons. The first is to work on timing, making sure
that lessons run for the right amount of time. It may be that an entire class of actual grade 2 students instead of
four adults pretending to be in grade 2 would have slowed the lesson down more. With more experience I will be
able to answer that point and be better with lesson length. The other issue was a misstep on my part while setting
up, which led to a bad word. I believe it slipped out because of the microteaching and being recorded. I was less
relaxed than I have been in the practicum. After that the rest of the lesson went smoothly. I asked questions, the
students asked questions, and I feel the lesson stayed on track and focused. Something to focus on is tone of
voice.
