Students will learn:

How poverty effects Albertan children
How to recognize poverty
How the effects of poverty can be combatted in the classroom
We will use a group discussion at the end of our presentation where
students will use their new found knowledge to answer discussion
questions
We will need paper and writing utensils for our class activity, as well
as use of the projector to display our presentation
We will also have a handout for students to read
Students will participate in an exercise ostensibly to relax and interact with
their group. This activity will actually show them the difficulty of completing
a task without the use of basic resources.

Introduction
We will then discuss how this activity relates to the problem of poverty in
the classroom, and begin our presentation.

How severe is poverty among Albertan children?

What problems do these children face in their lives?
Body

What effect does this have in the classroom and how can teachers recognize
the signs of poverty?
How can teachers tackle these problems? What are some current
educational trends?

Closure

We will close by reiterating the important impact that poverty has in

Albertan classrooms. We will then provide the students with a few prompts
for small group discussion, which we will bring into a larger group
discussion.
