Analysis

It is assumed that tissues were used to wipe sweat during the run, which were then
discarded as a source of litter.

Therefore, we suggest the following actions to be taken by the planning committee

to reduce the amount of litter:

1. At water points, committee may like to invest in permanent bottles instead of

mineral bottles.
2. Planning committee may like to include reminder messages such as “bring
your own towel for the run” in pre-run reminder messages.
3. The dropped water bottle was located near to a group of external
contractors – efforts to educate external contractors on environmental
impacts and mitigations may be useful for future events.

Limitations that we face while analysing the above data include:

1. Inability to determine whether lack of litter is due to the presence of cleaning

personnel. Since it is the norm for volunteers at water points to collect plastic
cups and the like at water points, litter which was originally present may have
been cleaned up by the personnel.

2. Shortage of sample sizes due to nature of event, thus may lead to an

inaccurate analysis.

Mitigation Strategies to overcome limitations:

1. Indicative areas were selected to maximise value of the litter report: Areas of
high traffic or high likelihood of disposable waste.

All in all, we feel that the amount of litter during the event is quite low and we would
like to commend on the planning committee’s efforts in keeping their event litter
free.
