Minerals in Greenland

Arctis is rich in valuable minerals.

Specially Greenland, where the underground has been examined during
many years.

The last years the interest about the Greenlandic underground has grown.
We know that Greenland has Gold, lead, zinc, platinum, iron, copper,
uranium, rubies, diamonds, rare earth elements and oil.
These minerals have been hunted for years. On the picture you can see,
where to find different minerals.

The climate changes results in that the areas with raw materials becomes
more accessible- the icecape become smaller, Arctic ocean is becoming
less.
Even though there are minerals and oil in Greenland, it is still too expensive
and difficult to extract and transport.

At the moment there is only one mine in Greenland extracting raw materials.
It is a Goldmine in south Greenland.

Some countries have plans about mining in Greenland, but they are still not
ready to start.

Earliar we had mining where they broke marble, zinc, lead, silver and coal.
But the biggest was the mine in South Greenland Ivittuut where they broke
cryolite also called the white gold. Cryolite was used to make aluminium.
That mine closed at the end of the 70ties
Here are some pictures about mining in Greenland.

Here you can see how many tons of different minerals have been found in
Greenland since 1782

Oil
According to U.S.Geological survey Arctis could hide 13% of undiscovered
oil reserves and 30% of the undiscovered natral gas reserves.
At the Greenlandic west coast some big companies have already license to
drill for oil.
Here you can see where we have oil.

The extracting of raw materials in Artis is inevitable, and it has already

affected the life and the nature in Greenland.

The feasibility studies only affect for instance the animals in Greenland, who
are very sensitive to changes, because they have few places they can live
and breed.
