1st Observation Lesson

10/21/08 – 2008-2009 School Year

Rationale: This lesson is important because it helps foster independence for 15 minutes

or more, enhance writing skills, problem solving skills, and geometric concepts.

Objectives:
• Make connections to independent learning
• Prepare shape board for geometric understanding
• Discover problem solving skills for themselves
• Prepare writing sample

NYS Standards:

ELA Standard #1- Students will read, write, listen, and speak for information and
understanding.

Math Band: Geometry- (Pattern Blocks)

Math Band: Problem Solving (Puzzle)

Materials:
• “Get Busy” Photo Book – Activity Schedule
• Clifford Puzzle
• Geometric shapes & Puzzle Board
• Dry erase board, marker, eraser, and sentence strip
• Reinforcement “snack”
• Another person to be the recorder

Step-by-step Sequence:
1.) First prepare all materials and have them set up in designated area. Then have
student look at me, and give the instruction “It’s time to get busy”. From this
point on no verbal prompts are given except during social hug, or final snack. All
other prompts are physical, I will be the students shadow, gradually backing off
as independence increases.
2.) Next, as student follows along in his photo book reward them for being on task
and working independently. While I am shadowing the student and giving
rewards another person will be recording the progress of the student, giving a +
mark for independent work and a – for teacher prompting.
3.) When finished give verbal praise and hug, and tell student to “go play, it’s free
time”. Then tally up the + and – to get an average for the session and record it on
the graph, to track progress.
Assessments:
The assessment for this lesson will be formal. I will be keeping track of the
students progress by tracking each session with a data collection sheet, and then graphing
each session on a master graph.
