Minutes for the SLA-Student Chapter Officers' Meeting

Topics discussed:
1) Fall meeting time
The last Monday of every month from 11:30-12:00p was suggested as a tentative meeting time
for the fall semester. No SLIS classes meet at this time, so we hope this will fit into most
people's schedules. Planning alternate monthly meetings at 5:00p on another weekday was also
proposed.

2) Publicity
Amy offered to email the SLIS listserv, prior to the fall orientation, with a brief note about who
the SLA-SC is and what our plans are for the fall.

3) SLIS orientation
Wednesday, September 1 is the SLIS orientation. From 4:30-5p, student organizations present
themselves to the new students. Mel will give a 2-minute overview of SLA-SC, defining what a
special library is and what SLA-SC does each semester. From 5-6p, student groups will be
available at a tabling session. All SLA-SC officers will be present. By August 21, SLA-SC
officers will submit sections for our posters to Mel, who will organize them:
• Amy: List examples of special libraries
• Kirstin: Summarize what SLA-SC did last year
• Jen: Provide SLA-Wisconsin Chapter events for fall 2010

4) SLIS newsletter update

Student organizations are expected to write a brief event update for the SLIS newsletter. We
may submit our summary in early August or February. We elected to wait until February, in
order to provide a review of what we accomplished in the fall as well as highlight what we'll be
up to spring semester.

5) Ideas for meetings and events for the coming year

The following were suggested for tours: Special Collections in Memorial Library, Mills Music
Library, Robinson Map Library, Geography Library. We would like to combine a librarian talk
with a tour of their library.

6) Officer duties
Kirstin will continue taking meeting notes for the fall; Jen offered her assistance for the spring.
Amy will take charge of our website maintenance, although Kirstin will post the monthly
meeting notes.

7) Next meeting
We will hold a brief SLA-SC meeting after the SLIS orientation (Sept. 1) to reconnect and
establish our first fall meeting. All are welcome, but only officers are expected to attend.
