GROSS CONTAMINATION:
Using a cloth or coffee filter, strain out all large particles.

fit to drink.

FILTERS:
Typically remove pathogens down to the 0.2-0.3 micron range. Certain organisms
(Leptospira, viruses) can pass through the 0.2 micron filters.

According to Wilderness Medicine: Management of Wilderness and

Environmental Emergencies, 3rd Edition: “...for foreign travel and for surface
waters with heavy levels of fecal or sewage contamination, filters should not be
used as the sole means of disinfection.”

SOLAR WATER DISINFECTION (SODIS):

Water placed in clean PET bottles is exposed to sunlight (UV) for at least 6 hours
will kill most microorganisms.
