NATURAL APPROACH

According to the Natural Approach the learning of second language should be like
acquiring the native language. I learned that learning and acquiring are totally different from
each other. Receptive skills are given importance in Natural Approach.

I have covered the five hypothesis of Krashen

 The Natural Order Hypothesis;

Acquisition of a language follows an order. For example; we learn simple past tense after
simple present tense.

 The Acquisition/Learning Hypothesis;

As I mentioned before learning and acquisition differ from each other. Acquisition is a
subconscious process while learning is not. It requires real communication and interaction.
Therefore acquiring is more important than learning. Learning means having knowledge about a
language in this perspective.

 The Monitor Hypothesis

During the learning process monitoring ourselves is important because it is a conscious

process. We need to control our output.

 The Input Hypothesis

Understanding the message is the way we acquire a language according to this

hypothesis. Ones speaking takes some time which is called silent period. In this period learners
only get input but unable to get output.

 Affective Filter Hypothesis

This hypothesis is the humanistic side of this approach because errors which only cause
meaning problems should not tolerated. The anxiety level of the learners should be eliminated
in order to make the learning happen.
