Bosnian Jew Sven Alkalaj Honors Srebrenica Genocide

The most prominent Bosnian Jew, Sven Alkalaj, is a proven friend of the Srebrenica
genocide victims and survivors. Sven Alkalaj is a man of honor and integrity.

On July 6th, 2009, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina Sven Alkalaj visited
Srebrenica on the occassion of the 14th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide. Alkalaj is one of the
most prominent Bosnian Jews and a member of the Party for Bosnia and Herzegovina led by Dr. Haris
Silajdžić.Alkalaj met with the Mayor of Srebrenica and discussed the current and planned projects in
Srebrenica.

He also paid a visit to the Srebrenica Genocide Memorial and laid flowers in remembrance of 8,372
victims of genocide and 30,000 people that were forcibly expelled from Srebrenica in July 1995. As he
said, he regularly pays tribute to the victims of genocide in Srebrenica. He called for the Srebrenica
genocide memorials to be held every single month, and not just once per year.
Serb Abuse of Foreign Aid to Srebrenica
“I have asked the minister to make a contact with the Netherlands embassy, so the Dutch government
starts directing humanitarian aid to Srebrenica directly through the municipal government of
Srebrenica,” said Mayor of Srebrenica Osman Suljić.
This is particularly important because local Serb organizations abuse humanitarian aid and monetary
funds intended only for the survivors of the Srebrenica genocide and Bosniak returnees to Srebrenica.
Many dubious Serb NGOs do so by pretending to be a voice of the genocide victims, when in fact they
represent the voice of those who committed the genocide in Srebrenica.

Alkalaj promised that Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the coming period will help the municipality of
Srebrenica, in cooperation with foreign factors through various development projects.
“For us it is extremely important to start the international negotiations for the compensation of the
sunken land Bajina Basta [caused by Serbia's hydro projects on the Drina River], which would – in this
case – mean a lot for our budget,” said Suljić. Alkalaj will push for the restart of negotiations so
Bosniaks can be compensated for sunken farm land.
