LOW PURINE DIET

Regular medication indefinitely is an important measure in the prevention of


further attacks of gout and hyperuricaemia and in the prevention of
complications.

Dietary measures include the following:


1. Eat as much as you can
Milk, egg, most vegetables, most fruits, bread, butter or margarine, cheese, white
meat e.g. chicken, fish, pork, etc.

2. Restrict your intake


Asparagus, cauliflower, lettuce, mushroom, oat meal, whole wheat, cereal, red
meat.

3. Abstain completely
(A) All internal organs of animals and birds
Liver, kidney, brain, heart, pancreas, sweetbread.
(B) Rich Games
Venison, gamebird pigeon, black chicken.
(C) Meat Extracts
Gravies, chicken essence, bakut teh.
(D) Certain fish
Salmon, Herring, Anchorier, Sardines, Cockles, Fish Roe.
(E) Certain vegetables
Spinach, Rhubarb, Peas, Beans, Peanuts, Carrot.
(F) Products of Beans
Beancurd, Soya bean drink, Bean Sprout, Bean Cake, Moon Cake.
(G) Certain fruits
Stawberries, Strawberry jam, Durian, Tomato, Tomato Sauce.
(H) Certain Alcohol
Beer, Champagne, Brandy, Whisky, Port & Sweet Wine.

Note: Maintain a normal diet. Overweight makes the condition more difficult to
control. However, weight reduction must be gentle or else an acute attack may
be induced.
• Drink plenty of fluids (at least 2 litres daily) to help in renal excretion
of uric acid.
• Avoid feasting and fasting.

A periodic check on blood uric acid levels must be made.
