Festival description

Every year in August the Sardine Festival in


Portimão opens the door to visitors from all
world. This event is well attended by
Portuguese and tourists alike and is organised
by the local council. Apart from sardines there
will be other Portuguese culinary delights and
plenty of good wine and beer! There will also
be music concerts & fireworks.
Festival History
ü The first Edition of the Festival of the Sardine and the
sea in Portimão was in 1985;
ü In the first year had 15,000 visitors;
ü 5 years later, in 1990, the number of visitors came up
to 40 000 visitors;
ü between 1991 and 2001 the Festival was closed;
ü The Festival returned only in 2001, occupying the
space of the modern park Fairs and Exhibitions of
Portimão.
Festival program
ü Ethnographic animation - visitors can find
information about the various uses, customs and
traditions of the people of Portimão, watch the art
of repairing fishing nets craft;
ü Concourse “Papa Sardinhas” - during the Festival
runs the Concourse “Papa Sardinhas” , that
challenges the ability and the taste of visitors by
sardines. A hobby in which participants have to eat
as much grilled sardines for 15 minutes.
