Digital Citizenship

By Bob Jarabeck
What is Digital Citizenship?
• “Critical thinking and ethical choices about the
content and impact on oneself, others, and one’s
community of what one sees, says, and produces
with media, devices, and technologies.” – Anne Collier –
netfamilynews.org

• Digital Citizenship means that kids appreciate

their responsibility for their content as well as
their actions when using the Internet, cell
phones, and other digital media. – Common Sense Media

• My Definition: Digital Citizenship is learning,

understanding and practicing the ethical use
of technology on a daily basis with emphasis
on digital devices, privacy and security.
Why Digital Citizenship?

• “It’s better to explain how to use technology properly rather

than to block it. Locked down, restricted situations can
inhibit learning. If teachers and administrators develop their
knowledge of what it really means to be an online learner
and take responsibility for what happens in their schools,
education is enhanced all around.”
- Julie Lindsay, E-Learning Coordinator,
Beijing (BISS) International School

• There is a need to make sure the youth of today are

aware of the responsibilities and possible pitfalls of
current technology in society while preparing them for
what is coming in the future.
