Speed of Sounds
The speed of sounds depends on two things : kinds and temperature of medium
Air (gas) is a medium that is most often passed by sounds waves, Liquid and solid are better
medium that air.
The speed of sound in the air depends on its temperature. The higher the temperature of the
air, the faster the speed of sound.

Frequency of sounds
The sounds whose frequency is between 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz is called audio sonic, This range
of frequency that can be hear by humans
The sound whose frequency is less than 20 Hz is called infra sonic
The sound whose frequency is more that 20,000 Hz is called ultra sonic

EXAMPLE
1. A dolphin is placed in a laboratory 600 km under the sea. It produces sounds. If the
sound moves in the water at the speed of 1500 m/s, How much time does someone
need to hear the dolphind’s sound?
Given:
s = 600000 m
v= 1500 m/s
Ask :
t=….?

Solution:
s 600000m
t   400 s
v 1500m / s

2. Rico observed and explosion of fire crackers from distance and after 0,8 he heard the
sounds. He was 273.6 m away from the spot. What is the speed of sounds in the air at
that time?
Given:
t = 0.8 s
s = 273.6 m
Ask :
v=….?
Solution:
s 273.6m
v   342m / s

EXERCISE
1. Sasha sound trumpet, after 10 s the sound of trumpet is just heard by someone at
distance of 200 m from her. What is speed of sound on air?
2. Nila sees the flash of lighting from distant. After 3 second later is heard the sound of the
thunder. Calculate distance between Nila the flash of lighting, if speed of sounds is 340
m/s!
3. Tarjo sounds horn of his car. Someone in front of him car just hear the sound of horn
after 0.8 s since the horn is sounded. Is speed of sound on air is 400 m/s. what is the
distance of someone from Tarjo’s car?
