3. Materials
3.1 General
The steels used for the fabrication of the bolting shall be produced in a MARTIN furnace, in an
electric furnace, or by the basic oxygen process.
All parts shall undergo thermal hardness treatments in accordance with the requirements of the
applicable codes and standards i.e. ASME B31.3, ASTM A193, ASTM A320, ASTM A194.
All bolts and Nuts material selection shall be as defined in GS EP PVV 112.

3.2 Impact tests

Bolting specified to ASTM A320 or specified for low-temperature service shall undergo charpy
impact test as per requirement defined in ASTM A320.
Bolting nut of ASTM A194 Gr.4 when specified for low temperature below -48°C, supplementary
requirement S3 impacted at -101°C shall be apply. An “L” shall be added on the marking, for nuts
so tested.
Since bolting ASTM A453 Gr.660 Class A is limited to -29°C as per Table A-2 of ASME B31.3,
bolts of the supply shall be impact tested:
 At -100°C for all piping material classes used at low temperature service (up to -46°C)
 At -196°C for all piping material classes stainless steel subjected to blowdown situation and
used for cryogenic service.
Energy impact tested values shall meet the requirements of ASME B31.3.

4. Dimensions
4.1 Stud bolts and screws
The diameters of stud bolts for piping flange joints shall be in accordance with ASME B16.5 for
NPS  24 and ASME B16.47 Series A for NPS > 24 selected according to appropriate pressure
class.
Diameters shall be specified in inches, and lengths shall be in millimeters.

Hexagon head machine screws shall comply with ASME B18.2.1, and specified requirements for
diameter, length, and material grade.
Bolt Length requirements shall be as follows:
 The length of stud bolts for standard flange-to-flange joints for NPS  24 shall comply with
tabulated figures from ASME B16.5 for the relevant pipe size and pressure class.
 The length for all other bolts and hexagonal machine screws, including stud bolts for
ASME B16.47 Series A flange-to-flange joints, lug style valves, line blinds, orifice flanges,
etc. shall be determined according to the calculation method given in ASME B16.5 Appendix
C.
 Bolting for use with bolt tensioners shall have the normal length increased by one bolt size
minimum.
Note: Bolt length specified above do not consider the situation of a flange connection equipped
with proprietary design gasket (i.e. Kamos).
The lengths given on the requisitions are service lengths that do not include the dimensions of
the end bevels.

4.2 Nuts
All nuts shall be of the hexagonal type ("Heavy" series) and shall be in accordance with
ASME B18.2.2.

5. Fabrication
5.1 General
Product manufacturing shall be suitable for the product service conditions.
Stud bolts and nuts may be machined from treated steel rods. However, nuts may also be forged.
Screws shall be made by die-working the heads.
After these operations of forging and die-working, the bolting shall undergo the hardness
treatments required by the reference codes and standards.

5.2 Threading
Thread manufacturing process shall be suitable for the product service conditions and minimize
risk of SCC where applicable.
Threading shall be in conformity with the following series of ASME B1.1:
 "Coarse" series: for diameters less than or equal to 1"
 "8 threads" series: for diameters equal to or greater than 1" 1/8.
Stud bolts shall be threaded along their entire length. The machining and surface-condition
tolerances applicable to the various threading shall be in conformity with the following classes:
 Class 2A of ASME B1.1 for stud bolts and screws
 Class 2B of ASME B18.2.2 for nuts.

5.3 Surface treatment

Except for stainless steel materials, bolting shall be protected against corrosion as stated in
GS EP COR 356.

6. Quality control
The inspection and tests necessary to confirm that the products meet the requirements of the
standards, specifications and requisitions shall be carried out in the Manufacturer's plant by
personnel of the plant. This specially-qualified personnel shall be independent of the production
department of the plant.
Products shall be guaranteed by an inspection certificate (conformity, material, test, etc.), which
must accompany the supply.
If the Manufacturer does not have the necessary means of examination, these tests may be
carried out by an Inspection Agency and at a place approved by the Company or the Engineering
Company.
The quantity for sacrifice material for each bolting size and material shall be defined in the
requisitions issued by Engineering Company to preserve for any additional testing required by
Company. The sacrifice material shall be in the same size and same heat number for each bolting
size and material.

7. Manufacturer's dossier
Manufacturer dossier’s shall be available in digital format unless otherwise specified.

7.1 Certificates of conformity

The Manufacturer shall submit certificates of conformity with the standards specified in the
requisitions.

7.2 Material certificates

The Manufacturer shall submit EN 10204 Inspection Certificate 3.1 material certificates giving the
results of the chemical analysis and of the mechanical tests carried out in accordance with the
requirements of the reference codes and standards. This documentation shall also include the
test report and metallurgical examination relating to the random check required for low
temperature carbon steel bolts and nuts for service at -30°C and below.
Bolting used for utility service and open drain may be submitted with EN 10204 Inspection
Certificate 2.2 material certificates.

8. Preparation for shipment

8.1 Marking
In addition to the markings required by the reference standards, the grade of steel and the maker's
mark shall be cold-stamped on each bolting element.
The marking shall be located on one of the ends of each stud bolts and one of the flats of each
screw head and each nut.
