3. Definitions
The following terms used in this document are detailed below.
Bare For CS/LAS fasteners, “bare” means that the parts are not delivered with any
permanent corrosion protection. However a temporary corrosion protection needs
to be applied on CS/LAS bolts for fabrication, transport, storage and construction
phases.
CS/LAS Carbon Steel and Low Allow Steel.
HDG Means hot-dip galvanised as per the requirements of ASTM A153, with zinc
coating thickness in accordance with ASTM A153 Table 1 or ISO 10684.
Insulated Means that the bolt is under insulation.
PXX Refers to the paint systems as described in GS EP COR 350.
SS Stainless Steel.
Under PFP Means that intumescent type passive fire protection (PFP) is applied on the bolt.

4. Corrosion protection requirements

The corrosion protection required for fasteners depending on location, application, material,
insulated or non-insulated condition, and range of service temperature is detailed in Table 1.
The property class indicated for CS/LAS refers to ISO 898-1.
For structures and equipments in areas classified as corrosivity categories C3 and C4, the
approved painting systems shall be selected from the ACQPA reference systems which can be
found on www.acqpa.com.

Notes
1 The paint system (except the topcoat) shall be applied on all exposed parts of the bolt/nuts before

assembly. The topcoat is applied after assembly.

2 The paint system is applied after assembly on the exposed parts.

3 For subsea CS/LAS bolts, temporary corrosion protection may include:

- Zn plating followed by baking (detailed procedure to be provided for review and approval by
Company).
- Phosphating + Xylan 1424.
4 For SS and Nickel based alloy fasteners, “bare” means that the SS and Nickel based alloy are not

delivered with any permanent corrosion protection but they may still require coating for other purposes,
e.g. galling prevention.
5 From Company approved vendor list, minimum thickness 10 µm.

5. Technical requirements for painting of fasteners

It is required to remove dust and other foreign particles on bolts by using compressed air, then
degreased. The compressed air is free of oil and water in accordance with ASTM D4285.
Painting thickness measurement in accordance with ISO 19840 needs be performed on a test
plate.
Each coat has to be a different colour to facilitate quality control.
After assembly any painting repair needs to be performed as per relevant repair system.

6. Maintenance of fastener corrosion protection

The corrosion protection of fasteners can be maintained with one of the following methods:
• Protection with grease: this requires frequent renewal of grease, and the use of bolt end
caps to keep the grease in contact with the bolt end and the nut.
• Protection of the bolted joint with wax tapes: this requires the use of a priming paste
compatible with the wax tape.
• Protection of the bolted joint with a peelable encapsulation system (hot- or cold-applied).
