. The applicable standard taking into account settlement limitation.
- Non Overturning:
. For service loads, the ratio of the unfactored stability moment to the unfactored
overturning moment will not be less than 1.50.
. For columns and stacks greater than 30 m in height, this ratio will not be less than
1.66.
. A subgrade decompression limit may also be taken into account. This limitation is
based on the recommendations of the geotechnical engineer.
• Non Sliding:
- The horizontal active thrust will remain below mobilisable friction in the soil-structure
interface.
- The ratio of the unfactored resisting force to unfactored sliding on the horizontal thrust
force will not be less than 1.30.
- The cohesion effect will be neglected unless otherwise stated in the geotechnical
study.
- For the calculation of the resisting force, the passive earth pressure on vertical sides of
footings and walls will be neglected down to a depth of 0.50 m below the ground
surface, after completion of works.
- The coefficient of horizontal passive earth pressure to take into account is that from the
accidental case, unless special derogation allowed by Company.
- The concrete pavings and the miscellaneous kinds of platforms and roads (in gravel-
cement, gravel-slag, sand-cement, sand-slag, etc.) will not be taken into account when
assessing the passive pressure unless written Company agreement.
• Settlements:
- The limit values to be taken into account will be specified by the Engineering Company
and approved by Company.

Test piles and loading tests on piles may be required to validate foundation design (see § 7.3).

6.4.4.2 Stability
The ability of deep foundations (piles, barrettes) to withstand horizontal forces shall be checked
on the basis of allowable horizontal forces provided by the geotechnical report.

For all calculations regarding deep foundations with several piles or barrettes, any group effect
shall be taken into account according to EN 1997.

When piles or barrettes are constructed, in ground, in place or backfill likely to settle on all or
part of their depth, calculations shall take into account the resulting negative skin friction.

6.5 Storage tank foundations

Foundations of storage tanks shall be designed and built in accordance with the
GS EP CIV 401.

7. Construction
Concrete works shall be executed according to GS EP CIV 300.

7.1 Origin and quality of materials

PPS shall specify:
• The characteristics and the quality of materials to be used, in case Company General
Specifications need to be supplemented or modified.
• Site specific requirements for the durability (corrosion, chemical attack…) of materials.

Piled foundations shall be reinforced unless it is demonstrated that they will not be subjected to
horizontal loads or bending moments.

If the ground is polluted and a decontamination is not feasible, the following requirements shall
be selected in accordance with the conclusions of the pollution report provided by Company:
• The materials used in the composition of the concrete

7.3 Pile load tests

Pile load tests shall be carried out in the following situations:
• When using a type of pile or installation method for which there is no comparable
experience
• When the piles have not been tested under comparable soil and loading conditions
• When the piles will be subject to loading for which theory and experience do not provide
sufficient confidence in the design. The pile testing procedure will provide loading similar
to the anticipated loading
• When observations during the process of installation indicate pile behavior that deviates
strongly and unfavorably from the behavior anticipated on the basis of the site
investigation or experience
• When additional ground investigations do not clarify the reasons for this pile behavior
deviation.

Before starting tests, Contractor shall provide drawings, tests schedule and arrangement to
Company for approval.

Test results may involve the adaptation of the design of foundations, in agreement with
Company.

No construction on site shall proceed before Company approval.

• Be performed to predetermined criteria

• Be carried out under the control of Company Representative on site.

The pile load test procedure shall be defined according to all the following requirements:
• With respect to the number of loading steps, the duration of these steps and the
application of load cycles
• Be such that conclusions can be drawn about:
- The deformation behavior
- Creep and rebound of a piled foundation from the measurements on the pile.
• Be provided in a document detailing the design and procedures of test arrangement
• Be agreed by Company before carrying out tests.

For trial piles, the loading shall be such that conclusions can be drawn about the ultimate failure
load.

Test requirements can follow a recognized code or guideline such as ASTM D1143,
ASTM D4945, ASTM D5780, ASTM D5882, ASTM D6760, NF P94-150 (Parts 1, 2),
NF P94-151, NF P94-153 as appropriate to the type of loading, test and consistent with the
standard adopted for design.

Dynamic load tests may be used to demonstrate the compressive resistance provided an
adequate site investigation has been carried out and the method has been calibrated against
static load tests on the same type of pile, of similar length and cross-section, and in comparable
soil conditions.

A factual report presenting all load tests results shall be provided to Company.

In case Company finds the results are not satisfactory, the following may be requested:
• New tests
• Structural reinforcements such as replacing failed piles.

These operations shall be carried out at no expense to Company.

7.4 Layout tolerance

Reference shall be made to the requirements of applicable codes and PPS.

In case of a slab founded on piles, the minimum distance between the axis of a pile and the
edge of the slab shall be, at least, 1.5 times the largest cross-sectional dimension of the pile.

Construction tolerances are given in GS EP CIV 401.
