1.0 Purpose and Scope

This procedure provides 1305 Engineering and Construction Ltd work practices as well as personal
hygiene and work site sanitation standards for housekeeping.
This procedure applies to all projects and operations under the control of 1305 Engineering and
Construction Ltd.

2.0 Terms and Definitions

None

3.0 Roles and Responsibilities

3.1 Project Manager (Field Task Manager, Supervisor) is responsible for the procedure’s
implementation and the details of addressing housekeeping policy within the
construction/demolition worksite.
3.2 Site Safety Officer will monitor, assess, and report on project housekeeping on sites.
3.3 Employees are responsible for reporting any areas of concern to the Site Supervisor/Site Safety
Officer for prompt resolution as well as for maintaining worksites that are free from debris, clutter
and slipping or tripping hazards.

4.0 Smoking, Eating, and Drinking

Eating and drinking will be permitted in designated areas at project sites and as specified on client sites.
Smoking will be permitted only in areas designated in compliance with applicable local laws,
regulations, legislation, and ordinances, by the Field Supervisor/Site Safety Officer and situated in
locations that are not in the immediate vicinity of activities associated with work site activities.
Additionally, Field Supervisor/Site Safety Officer will designate each smoking area giving primary
consideration to those personnel who do not smoke.
Site personnel will first wash hands and face after completing work activities and prior to eating or
drinking.
5.0 Water Supply

Water supplies will be available for use on site and will comply with the following requirements:
5.1 Potable Water: An adequate supply of drinking water will be available for site personnel
consumption. Potable water can be provided in the form of approved well or city water, bottled
water, sachets or drinking fountains. Potable water containers will be properly identified in order to
distinguish them from non-potable water sources.
5.2 Non-potable Water: Non-potable water will not be used for drinking purposes. Non-potable water
may not be used for hand washing or other personal hygiene activities but may be used for other
types of cleaning activities. All containers/supplies of non-potable water used will be properly
identified and labeled as such.
6.0 Toilet Facilities

Toilet facilities will be available for site personnel and visitors. Should subcontractor personnel be
located on-site for extended periods, it may become necessary to obtain temporary toilet facilities.
A minimum of one toilet will be provided for every 30 site personnel, with separate toilets maintained for
each sex, except where there are less than five total personnel on site.
Washing Facilities
Hand and Face: Site personnel will wash hands and face after completing work activities and prior to
breaks, lunch, or completion of workday.
Personal Cleaning Supplies: Cleaning supplies at project sites will consist of soap, water, and
disposable paper towels or items of equal use/application (e.g., anti-bacterial gels, wipes, etc.).

7.0 Clothing and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

(a) All PPE will be kept clean at all times and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s
requirements.
(b) General Work Areas
(c) At all times work areas will be kept free of dirt and debris that may impact the safety of site
personnel and visitors. All trash bins will be emptied regularly.
(d) Break Areas and Lunchrooms
(e) Site personnel will observe the following requirements when using break areas and lunchrooms at
project sites:
(f) All food and drink items will be properly stored when not in use.
(g) Food items will not be stored in personal lockers for extended periods in order to prevent the
potential for vermin infestation.
(h) Perishable foods will be refrigerated whenever possible.
(i) All waste food containers will be discarded in trash receptacles.
(j) All tables, chairs, counters, sinks, and similar surfaces will be kept clean and free of dirt, waste
food, and food containers at all times.

8.0 Vermin Control

(a) Every enclosed workplace shall be constructed, equipped, and maintained, so far as reasonably
practicable, to prevent the entrance or harborage of rodents, insects, and other vermin.
(b) A continuing and effective extermination program shall be instituted where the presence of rodents,
insects, or other vermin is detected.

9.0 General Housekeeping

(a) All work areas shall be kept clean to the extent that the nature of the work allows.
(b) Every work area shall be maintained, so far as practicable, in a dry condition. Where wet
processes are used, drainage shall be maintained and platforms, mats, or other dry standing places
shall be provided, where practicable, or appropriate waterproof footgear shall be provided.
(c) Protruding objects or placement of materials on paths or foot traffic areas present a problem with
regard to slips, trips, falls, and puncture wounds. Personnel will use a reasonable amount of effort
to keep slip, trip, and fall hazards to a minimum.

(d) Excess debris and trash will be collected and stored in an appropriate container (e.g., plastic trash
bags, garbage can, roll-off bin) prior to disposal.
(e) At no time will debris or trash be intermingled with waste PPE or contaminated materials.
(f) Material and equipment must be placed, stacked, or stored in a stable and secure manner. Stacked
material or containers must be stabilized as necessary by interlocking, strapping, or other effective
means of restraint to protect the safety of workers.
(g) An area in which material may be dropped, dumped, or spilled must be guarded to prevent
inadvertent entry by workers or protected by adequate covers and guarding.
(h) Floors, platforms, ramps, stairs, and walkways available for use by workers must be maintained in a
state of good repair and kept free of slipping and tripping hazards. If such areas are taken out of
service, the employer must take reasonable means for preventing entry or use.
(i) Hazardous areas not intended to be accessible to workers must be secured by locked doors or
equivalent means of security and must not be entered unless safe work procedures are developed
and followed.
