Fire Protection
Insurers Requirements
• In the current climate Insurers are looking very
closely at all claims to ensure that policy
conditions have been fully complied with.

• Failure to comply would result in claims not

being met.

3
What Do Insurers expect?
• At the very least, policy holders must comply with the
Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order, and the
provisions of all Health & Safety at Work Regulations.
• The Former will be dealt with by Colin Whittington.
• Basically the Health & Safety at Work Regulations
require Employers to take all necessary steps to
safeguard their employees whilst at work. (Including
from the risk of fire).

3
Fire Risk
• Insurers are looking much more closely at the
risk of Fire and even smaller businesses may
get a visit from their Surveyor either when a
policy is taken out or on renewal.

3
What Will The
Surveyor Be Looking
At?

3
Documentary Evidence
• Fire risk assessments.
• Maintenance records for fire alarm systems and
extinguishers.
• Inspection record for electrical wiring and PAT
testing .
• Where appropriate record of fire alarm testing
and fire drills.

3
Housekeeping
(Surveyors tend to be greatly influenced by this.)
• Are the premises clean and tidy with no
accumulation of rubbish.
• Are all Fire Exits and Escape Routes kept clear.
• Where goods are stored outside, are they well clear
of buildings.
• In offices particularly surveyors will look carefully
for trailing wires or overloaded electrical sockets.
• Fire Doors should be kept closed (Not propped open
with fire extinguishers!)
3
Construction of Buildings
(Surveyors will be looking for anything which increaces
the risk of fire spreading.)
• Storage of combustible materials.
• Roof and ceiling voids.
• Any work processes where there is application
of heat.
• Where there is fire separation between
buildings, has this been breached by
installation of wiring or pipes?
