The Large Hadron Collider

Zain Siddiqui & Arjun Dhawan

What is the LHC?
• The Large Hadron Collider is a particle accelerator
located underground in Switzerland

• Due to the mass amount of metal, electricity and

power required for the LHC, it cost over £5 billion

• The accelerator a 17 mile, air-tight, magnet-

coated, sealed tunnel which runs in a complete
circle, past the border to France, and back
What does the LHC do?
• The magnets in the Hadron Collider produce energy
which heat and speed up beams of protons
• The proton beams are sent in opposite directions
around the tunnel, where eventually collide with
each other
• The aim of this Collider is to try and prove the Big
Bang theory, by colliding these beams, as these
collisions are the exact same as the formation of the
Earth (according to the Big Bang) but on a much
smaller scale
Where is this all taking place?
• All experiments involving the LHC are taken
place at the CERN Laboratory in Switzerland,
where the Collider itself has been created
• During experiments involving the actual use of
the LHC, all scientists are to observe from
ground level as the Collider produces a large
amount of energy which is dangerous to
humas
Speculation & Controversy
• In March 2007, Walter Wagner, a nuclear safety
office located in Hawaii, reported a case against the
LHC
• He stated, that the experiment could possibly create
a black hole which could potentially suck up the
entire world in the space of a few seconds
• Numerous scientists agreed with this controversy,
but not enough to make the experiment stop, so the
courts blew over the case and experimentation
continued as normal
