How to make a good
presentation
Oral Presentation Tips
Step by step:
• Who is your audience?
• What do you want to say?
• How do you prepare?
• Preparing your audiovisuals
• The moment of truth
• … and their questions
Who is your audience?

The only measure of a good presentation:

The reaction of your audience

– Do they manage to stay awake?

– Listening to you or chatting with their neighbour?
– 2 days later, will they remember anything?
– Will they be convinced?
Ask yourself…
– What do they already know about your topic?

– Are they already interested in your topic?

– Attitude: will they follow you easily?

– What sources do they usually listen to?

– Do they understand English easily?

What do you want to say?
• Inverted pyramid: most important things first,
details when they sleep already
• Journalistic check-list:
Who? What? When? Where? Why?

• Tell a story.
• Your audience determines what you say and how
you say it.
• Don’t talk too much.
How do you prepare?
• Your presentation is the tip of the iceberg.

• Leave the rest of the iceberg out.

• Don’t tell them what they know already.

• Speak loud and slow. Never ever read,

neither from a paper nor from a slide.
Your audiovisuals
• Maximum of 1 slide per minute

• Charts and graphics are better than words

• Each chart should make one simple point

• If you need words, the 6x6 rule applies

• No sentences, only emphasis

The moment of truth

• Take a deep breath, take your time

• Look into their eyes

• Speak to smiling, friendly faces

… and their questions

• Often the most important part

• Prepare some additional information

• Remember:
You are not expected to know everything
And now:
Make your presentation a top
presentation!

Do you want to see how the evening

prepared their presentations?
