Section I. SERVICE UPON RECEIPTO,F MATERIE.L

6. General

a. 'When new 01' reconditioned materiel is first received by the using organization it is nee ary for the organizational mechanic to determine whether the materiel is complete and has been. properly prepared for service by the supplying organization, For this purpose, inspect. all assemblies, subassemblies, and accessories to be sure they are properly assembled secure, clean, and correctly adjusted or lubricated. Reference to paragraphs 51 through 0 will provide information on components of the various major groups of the gun.

b. record should be made of any missing parts and of any mal-

functions. Any such conditions should be corrected as quickly as possible,

c. Attention should be given to small and minor partsjas these are more likely to become lost and may seriously affect proper functioning of the machinegun.

d. The materiel should be cleaned and prepared for service in accordance with instructions given in paragraphs 7 and

7. New Materi<el

a. New machineguns received from storage are packed in a heatsealed} watee-vaporproof barrier bug lined with volatile corrosion inhibitor material ( CI). Guns previously were packed in watervaporproof bags and cotton stockinettes ( aran packing) .

0, Guns packed using these methods are completely coated with a light film of special preservative lubricating oil and are serviced as described in (1) through (5) below,

(1) Remove gun in cradle from the shipping container by removing eight screws from the removable end of box.

(2) Remove wooden cradle used to support the gun in the container by removing two screws from end near backplate assembly,

Section U. OPERATION UNDER USUAL CONDITIONS

12 .. General

This section contains instruction for the steps necessary to operate the gun under conditions of moderat-e temperature and humidity. For aircraft guns, usunl operating conditions are considered tb atmospheric conditions ordinarily encountered while flying at low altitudes in a temperate zone. For operation under unusual conditions see pal'Hgmphs 21 tbrough 26.

13. Instal'.a.fionofGun in Aircraft

~lachinegUl1 installation in aircraft is the responsibility of tbe Air Force. Instructions for mounting the gun in aircraft are covered in Air Force schnical orders,

14.. Checking! and Adjusting Head Space

(1:. General. Head space is tile distance between the front face of bolt and the rear end of barrel. Head space is correct wben this distance is between 0.202 and 0.206 inch. Proper head space adjustment permits the bre ell lock to ride smoothly up the breech Jock cam into fully locked position, making positive contact with th forward wall of the breech lock recess in the. bolt, Improper adjustment of head space will cause malfunctions and possible damage to. gull. Head space must be checked and adjusted each time the gun is assembled and at Ul1Y time correctn is doubted. Malfunction due to. improper head space adjustment are listed in band c below.

b. Tight Head pace. Tight head space may cause the malfunctions listed 111 {l} through (3) below.

(1) Failure of the recoiling parts to go completely into battery because the breech lock cannot fullyenter the lading recess in the bolt.

(2) Failure of zun to fire because. the bolt cannot travel forward enough for the sear to bedepressed,

(3) luggish fire because of binding and excessive friction of moving parts (particularly noticeable when pulling a lonsr ammunition belt).

c. Loose Head , lHree. Loose head space may cause the malfunctions listed in (1) through (3) below.

(1) Rupturing 'Of the cartridge case because the bolt cannot hold the cartridge snugly in the chamber.

(2) Inability to obtain propel' timing.

(3) Battering of the breech lock, bolt and barrel extension because the locking surfaces of the breech lock are not in positive contact with the bolt recess a instant of firing.

The lubrication procedures are described in a throughe below.

a. pecial preservative lubricating oil is used -to lubricate the gun at all times to insure proper functioning at all temperatures,

b. Lubrication should be accomplished carefully and sparingly.

All excess oil should be wiped from the gun. This is particularly important with regard to the bolt barrel bn:f'fer assembly and chamber of barrel.
