Photoelectric effect::

Photoelectric effect is the phenomenon of emitting of electron from matter surface when
electromagnetic radiation of high frequency or low wavelength (like ultraviolet or light waves)
falls on it. The electrons emitted due to photoelectric effect are called photoelectron.

This behavior was first observed by the German scientist Heinrich Hertz in the year 1887.
So, it is also called as Hertz effect.

Uses of Photoelectric effect::

There are number of application these days which are solely based upon the Photoelectric effect.

1. Light emitting diode and solar cells are based upon the photoelectric effect. They
creates current from the electron emitted due to photoelectric effect.
2. Photoelectric effect is used in the automatic counter.
